Beverly Carter; A Wake Up Call For Us All

By
Real Estate Agent with SHAHAR Management

Beverly CarterWhen I heard about Beverly Carter I was devastated on Thursday as we all were.  I had just taught our office safety class on Wednesday and came away from the class feeling good about all of the knowledge that was passed along.

Then on Friday as we waited for news about Beverly I realized we could give 100 safety classes but if agents are not following certain fundamentals of basic safety you are already putting yourself at risk each and every day.

The biggest defense in your personal safety is always TRUSTING YOUR GUT.  Your gut will give you clues you might otherwise never have noticedNever let embarrassment over that feeling in your gut stop you from backing away from a potentially dangerous situation.

Always have your clients come to the office first to meet you and to go over their information and their needs. This exposure to others in your office will deter anyone who is not serious about buying or who has a hidden agenda.

Having someone with you during Open Houses is a must.  Gone is the day of doing these events alone.  You can always find a co-worker, mortgage broker, insurance agent, family member etc...who will gladly do these events with you.

Never let someone block you in a driveway when you are showing a home.  Leave your car on the outside for a quick get-a-way if necessary.

There are so many more tips but I know after this weekend our offices nationwide will be providing them.  Also self defense classes are a huge help to your personal safety as well.

As I type this, it is with such a heavy heart for Beverly Carter and her family.  They will never recover from this devastation but we can take this as a reminder that we must be extra diligent with all clients whether male or female.  Please be safe with all clients and continue to take all precautions even 6 months from now...don't let your good sense fade away as time passes....Always remember....TRUST YOUR GUT!

Thank you for your safety reminders.  Yes, we will all be talking about this in our offices in the coming days, but we can never be reminded enough.  No one thinks it will happen to them until it does.  Such a senseless loss of a life, and my thoughts and prayers go out to everyone whose lives Beverly touched.

Excellent advice that many agents have been practicing for years, but the Beverly Carter tragedy only serves to reinforce how important agent safety is.  There is no commission check in the world worth your life,

I can not agree with you more on this subject. I remember hearing this same thing years ago on a talkshow; ladies were interviewed and they gave such detailed stories about how important woman's intuition is and trusting your gut and why you can't let feeling embarrassed make you question it.

RIP Beverly Carter and my deepest condolences to her family and friends :'(

I run a business.  If a buyer calls up, and they are unknown o me, I handle it by vetting the caller.  It's business.

My sympathy to Beverly Carter's husband and family.

My beef is with "The System".  Each member of the Parole Board should explain why they let this murderer out of prison, and set a criminal loose upon Society.

Debra, thanks for writing this post and spreading the awareness of safety FIRST!

We just need to make sure we meet new clients in the office during hours as that can raise or lower red flags.  I think it is a good idea to check Facebook and see if the client we are to meet has a presence there.

I always try and accompany Sharon on a showing if we have not met the person.  Will have to revisit the open house issue as we sometime conduct open houses at the same time.(although I like to switch for safety reasons on who was advertised to host which property)

Keep "Tabs" on your fellow agents!

Never show ANY homes to someone you have not pre-qualified and identified, Know WHO they are first, and even then have agents check-in during showings.

Would you meet a stranger from a phone call in an empty house alone?

You wouldn't do that in your personal life, DO NOT DO IT IN BUSINESS!

Real estate agents can be targets and those that work in more rural areas need to be extra alert. It is a tragedy for sure

Good Morning Debbie: One of the practices I failed to do prior to helping out a police officer in finding his family's home is "To park where nobody can block your way." Since then, I never park on a driveway during my showings with not-so-familiar buyers.

Thanks for the tips Debbie.
