Rocky Mountain Diaper Depot - A charity I can really get "Behind" Boy, this one really struck a chord with me. A couple former clients have founded this great non-profit to not only help raise
awareness for the need for diapers for those that can't afford them on a regular basis, but to try to single- handedly change this forever.
Some Facts:
- 60,000 kids below the age of 5 live at or below the poverty level in metro Denver
- Infants and toddlers can use up to 8-10 diapers a day, costing as much as $150.00 a month.
- Food stamps can not be used to cover the cost of diapers
- To save money, many moms will re-use dirty diapers, this creates serious health issues and can delay toilet training
- To save money some kids are kept in the same diaper all day
- Most of these families do not own washing machines and most laundromats do not alllow diapers to be washed at their facilities, so they must use disposable diapers
- Drop in day cares require kids to arrive with their own disposable diapers, which creates a catch 22, parents can not drop their children at daycare to go find the much needed job to afford diapers
Regular access to an adequate number of clean disposable diapers changes all of these problems!
The founders of this program are both retired from the medical field and have seen firsthand the issues that lack of clean diapers for toddlers and infants can create and along with their husbands are creating an avenue for these parents and children to get the much needed diapers.
National Make a Difference Day is October 25th and I have agreed to spearhead this program in my neighborhood. Our goal is to collect 30,000 diapers and 500 wipes by the end of this month, so far we have 10 neighbors that are stepping up as drop off points and one of the founders has even purchased a passenger van, removed the seats so he can haul a few thousand diapers to the organizations that will distribute them.
Since its inception at the start of this year, Rocky Mountain Diaper Depot has collected and donated over 50,000 diapers and 1,000 wipes that have been distributed by eleven metro agencies -
- Stout Street Clinic
- DenUM
- The Gathering Place
- Warren Village
- Denver Inner City Parrish
- H.O.P.E.
- Street Reach
- After Hours Denver
- The Father Ed Judy House
- Mary's Maternity of Motherhood Home
- The Mountain Resource center
If you would like to know how you can help please visit The Rocky Mountain Diaper Depot or call me directly at 720-982-6322 and I will put you in touch with the founders.
We are going to start with one neighborhood and see if we can challenge other neighborhoods to beat us, all for a very good cause.
