Streamline Productivity or Being In the Moment
Apple Smartwatches are expected to hit the market in 2015, although I've already seen a few variations of the new technology in stores. This article caught my attention as it touts that the smart devices, which will be attached to our bodies, will streamline productivity. Like our cell phones aren't attached?
The article goes on to say wearable technically is a more convenient and personalized experience. Intriguing as the watch is, it really got me thinking as being present, in the moment is something I'm focusing more on. I couldn't help to wonder if I would be streamlining productivity over being present and in the moment with those I'm with.
Debut of the SmartWatch

So in addition to having my phone clipped to my side, I will have my smartwatch on my wrist. Now when I'm in the middle of a conversation or at the lunch with friends, no one will notice that I can't stop checking my watch!
I already use my phone for researching things on the Internet and of course checking and replying to emails at all hours of the day and night. Dare I say, I even do this sometimes when I'm driving. I'm often on my phone at the breakfast and lunch table but as one of my own rules, electronics are not allowed at the dinner table.
Technology VS Present in the Moment
Am I present in the moment with those who I am at lunch with or am I more enthralled with my phone? Looking at my own rule I established, I began to wonder if I'm really being the best dad and husband I can be. Am I hearing my kids in the morning or am I streamlining my productivity? There is a time and place for everything, right?
In today's technology driven world, are we becoming robots or are we people who desire human contact? How many other people get frustrated with the automated phone systems when we try calling so many businesses now? That's another entire blog topic!
One of my personal goals I'm setting for myself in 2015 is to set my phone aside - there is a time and a place for everything. I guess this means I won't be purchasing the next smartwatch but I will become more involved with my family and even my team members at the office.
In this world of instant gratification, I'm being honest when I say I don't want to know the second I get a new email, it can wait. If it was urgent, I would have received a phone call rather than an email. One of my professional goals for 2015 is to become more organized and use time more wisely. This will include establishing a daily schedule each morning outlining the tasks at hand and allocating a certain amount of time to each. Although the day isn't always going to be totally predictable, at least the time line helps put some order to my day.
What's your take on the smartwatch? Streamlined productivity or being present in the moment?
