Herndon High School serves students living in homes in Herndon, Reston and parts of Great Falls. Herndon High School is part of Cluster 1 and the Herndon High School pyramid, falling within the Fairfax County Public School System (FCPS) district. The FCPS system is the largest public school system in Northern VA. The mission at Herndon High School is to meet the needs of all students through high academic standards, outstanding instruction and promotion of ethical values. Through this mission, teachers will help students become productive citizens and life-long learners.
Herndon High School is home to a diverse group of students and over the years, students at this school have represented over 69 different countries. Herndon serves students in grades 9 through 12 and offers several diploma options including a standard diploma, advanced studies diploma and a modified diploma.

Students from Herndon Middle School feed into Herndon High School. There are six elementary schools located near to Herndon High School that are within the boundaries for Herndon: Aldrin, Armstrong, Clearview, Dranesville, Herndon and Hutchison. The Fairfax County Public School system has created a convenient boundary locator that can assist residents in determining which public school their child is eligible to attend based on where houses are located.
In addition to providing academic services to students in grades 9 through 12, students at Herndon participate in a peer mediation program, as well as a peer tutoring program. Several school clubs have been designed to focus on academic achievement, with a special emphasis on minority students.
Herndon High School also offers several programs to help ensure that all students have the ability to find academic success. The Pathway to the Baccalaureate program is a program which focuses on improving a student's access to college. This program supports twelfth graders as they move from high school to Northern Virginia Community College and then again when they transition to a four-year university.
The College Partnership Program (CPP) is also offered at Herndon High School and is another program designed to provide assistance to first generation college students and minority students as they enter on the pathway to college.
The school mascot, a fighting hornet is proudly displayed throughout the school and on uniforms, along with the school colors red and black.
Herndon High School students strive for excellence in academics, artistic fields and athletics. Herndon offers students Advanced Placement classes in preparation for future college study. This high school has put an important focus on technology’s role in helping to meet a student's educational goals. The school has two computer research labs as well as several laptop mobile labs.
Herndon High School offers students the opportunity to participate in Band, Choral, and Orchestral programs. The school has won awards for their performances in these areas. The school also has a Theater program. Additionally, Herndon has had a successful Robotics team.
The athletic department offers students the chance to take part in many different sports. Herndon High School has recently won a district championship in Boys Varsity Soccer.
