Which Tells a Better Story, Words or Pictures?

Is a picture truly worth a thousand words? Or, conversely, do words convey information and emotions in a way that a picture cannot possibly hope to achieve? Have you read an inspiring book lately?

My wife Tammie and I saw a most thought provoking movie the other night titled Words and Pictures. It featured Clive Owen and Juliette Binoche as teachers in a private high school--he teaches English, she teaches art. Both are accomplished in their chosen fields. They have a contest based on the subject of Words versus Pictures. I won't tell you the ending and the conclusion they arrived at, but we did enjoy the story immensely.

It got me thinking about ActiveRain and what we see posted everyday.

Which Tells a Better Story, Words or Pictures?

Often we see incredibly beautiful photography of beaches, sunsets, colorful landscapes, or even neatly stacked vegetables! The pictures somehow satisfy our eyes. On many occasions we are transported to whole other worlds outside our own experience. The blends of color can stir our emotions.

We also find some extraordinary writing on subjects that inform us, make us laugh, or make us cry. We can create art with our words if we take the time. It's exceedingly difficult to do so, but we do see it everyday on ActiveRain if we look for it.

I don't think there is a definitive answer to the question, "Which Tells a Better Story, Words or Pictures?" but I like the discussion. By the way, did I hear someone mention music??

I like pictures and I think they work best.  But a good photo or video supported by great writing or music is even better.

Congratulations on your feature recognition. I like to include pictures with the words. Sometimes, my photographs are better that my written message.

I took the extra moments to 'like' the comments on this blog to add some support and points for the members who support your efforts.

Tom, Excellent topic to discuss, and after reading all the responses, it appears the best choice may be a combination of all three, words, pictures and music. But, it really comes back to the recipient. It's a personal preference.

Tom, congrats on your feature! I've enjoyed reading the comments. Looks like the combination is the winner but, I do think some pictures say it all without any words needed.

If I had to choose just one:

Good, unretouched photos with a good subject (staged and clear of clutter for real estate photos) will trump words.  Buyers have little patience to read words when the picture is messy, dark or out of focus. They just click..."next"....

Depending on the subject matter either way is adequate to convey a message.   If it something that needs a lot more explanation than a photo, an article which generates discussion would be nice.

Tom, I was stopping by to read your market report.  I will check back soon

It is pretty amazing that your daughter got that shot from the sun roof of your car.  I wonder how many people drove past that and did not even see it. It is such a beautiful photo.

I know it sounds like I'm copping out on your question, but I think the answer lies in a marriage of each ... and including that music you mention at the end of your post!  Each can be beautiful and moving on their own.  But ohhhhh .. the magic they have when implemented together ...

LOVE that pic in your post.  Taken nearby???

Tom, can't say which is better, but I do think they can stand on their own merit so I'm guessing it depends totally on the words or photos you choose.

Tom -- Everyone can 'read' and understand pictures.  Can't say the same with words. In real estate I believe the visual has the most impact. Well written descriptions can create emotions, but well done pictures will always catch the eye... and hopefully the heart.

I like both. A powerful word message cooupled with an appropriate photo doubles the impact and makes the message come through loud and clear.

I was just thinking, "what about music?" when I saw your final comment. I also like different mediums - that makes it very, very powerful. Sound, sight, touch - engaging the senses is such a learning experience. ( You make me want to watch the movie....)

Hi Tom,

Personally,

i think it depends on the subject. A baby or a cat might be better with a picture. Words convey a feeling...

Congrats on the Feature!

Words and pictures can both be inspiring and move me.  A combination of both is my favorite!  I will have to look for that movie now.

Tom, first off, I want to blow up that fabulous photo and put it on my wall....truly loved it. (OK, I'm a visual gal, so you had me there). Then, reading about the movie--well, gosh, now I want to see that. Even more importantly, the message throughout the rest of this blog was just remarkable. You and Tammie captured something that draws me into this social network daily, as it feeds my soul, and allows us all the opportunity to tap into so very much, both in business, but in relationships, writings, musings, all of that and more. We are a lucky bunch!

(And I love both words and pictures together...give it all to me!)

Good morning Tom,

They say a picture is worth a thousand words, but they are good writers out there that will make the picture come alive. I am not a great writer so I let my pictures speak for themselves.

We make it easy. You make it home.

Very thought provoking post, Tom. Love the picture you choose and that movie sounds quite interesting. Pictures of course catch your eye immediately and I would say most of us succumb to them more than words.

Could it be that words often allow us to transcribe what we are feeling in a poetic way and that pictures allow us to seek inner thoughts about what we are seeing? Interesting post.
