Archer Mayor, a prominent Vermont author, will be making an appearance at Phoenix Books in Burlington, VT on Friday October 17, 2014 to discuss his latest book, Proof Positive. This book is the 25th book in a series which is based on fictional police detective Joe Gunther. The Gunther books all take place at different locations in Vermont.
The books in the Joe Gunther series have been published at a rate of approximately one per year since 1988 and have consistently ranked in yearly Top 10 lists by such well respected venues as the New York Times, LA Times, Washington Post and the New Yorker. I have read many of his books myself and am happy to also give my seal of approval :)
Mayor began writing while employed as a medical examiner. Having examined over 500 deaths, he is
very well versed with police and crime scene procedures which make his books particularly interesting. Whereas many writers base their books on only interviews and research, Mayor’s novels are based on actual personal experiences in the field. This results in a level of detail with copious depth. The Chicago Tribune describes his writing as "the best police procedurals being written in America". Mayor is also a winner of the New England Independent Booksellers Association Award for Best Fiction—the first time a writer of crime literature has been so honored.
Mayor had long wanted to be a professional writer because he enjoys telling stories. He has said, “I was a storyteller since I was knee-high to a grasshopper.” He had plenty of experiences for his stories by having lived in thirty places by the age of thirty. Mayor has fallen completely in love with Vermont and has now made it his home for the last thirty-four years.
