If you have young children, you know how difficult it can be to keep their attention at times. Not to mention trying to find kid-friendly activities for them that will not only occupy them for a while, but ignite their sense of creativity and teach them important life skills all at the same time. Well leave it to St. Petersburg to have the perfect place for your little ones to play, create, explore, and even learn! This amazing place goes by the name of Great Explorations Children's Museum, and it is absolutely incredible!
Children can play pretend in the miniturized businesses and community facilities, including a fire station, a veterinarian office, and a pizza joint where they can learn about fire safety, slide down a fire pole, examine real animal x-ray images, and learn about food preparation and commerce. There's even a grocery store and a tree house which passivley teaches them about construction.
There are also interesting and interactive science exhibits, all of which demonstrate basic scientific laws like gravity, momentum, and velocity. For lovers of the natural and animal sciences, a walk through the Critter Cave safely exposes kids to various animals such as turtles, chameleons, snakes, and other interesting creatures.
Great Explorations has even reserved a section just for toddler-aged children called "Great Beginnings" - a gated play area complete with a sandy beach-themed area to dig though and a bouncy ball pit! So much fun!
Certain exhibits are designed specifically to stimulate the senses and sense of curiosity, like the Touch Tunnel - a 100-foot dark passageway with all sorts of obstacles and textures along the path. Kids can use a wide assortment of magnets, blocks, and touchpads to sculpt, build, and and draw directly from their imaginations. They can even compose music with the help of a computer and common household items.
Of course, being in a place with so much to see and do somehow manages to bring out the inner child in all of us. After all, adults like to learn too! Even you will find things of interest, making this a great place to play and learn along with your family. If you've never been here with your kids before, I highly suggest paying a visit! You won't regret it. :)
