Accessorizing 101

By
Home Stager with Lea-Ann's Home Beautiful Staging and Design LLC

Accessorizing is the crown jewel of any room.  When all the correct scale furnishings are put into the layout that will create the best flow for the room things begin looking good. But, once you add the finishing touches…..artwork and accessories…..the room goes from good to WOW!

A few key guidelines:

  • Less is better than more…a few well chosen pieces can do wonders.
  • Use large scale art and accessories instead of lots of small items.
  • Classic accessories stand the test of time.  Themed rooms can seem silly and outdated quickly.
  • Collections should be grouped together, not spread throughout a room.
  • Layering can be very effective.
  • Varying heights brings beauty and excitement to a space
  • Hang art work at eye level for the average person (the average person is about 5’7”)
  • When hanging artwork above an anchoring piece of furniture, the artwork should be hung 6-10” above it.
  • Create balance through symmetrical displays or “visual weight” groupings

Your right on!!  Great points to share.  All of us can always use reminders to keep us on track.  Some homes are decorated, rather than staged, and we all have to remember to keep it under control!!  Thanks for sharing!

Lea-Ann,

Your tips are helpful, specific, and apply to decorating in general.  Great list.

Kristina -- that is my biggest pet peeve, too!  I recently found online the guideline of approx. 60 inches from the floor for artwork so at least now I have a quantifiable rule of thumb I can tell people!

Julie/Amy - Glad to share - I know most of us know these tips but like you said it never hurts to review.  Thanks!

Diana - It's one of my favorite parts too!

Kristina - That is one of my biggest pet peeves too!!!!  9 times out of 10 people hang their artwork too high.  It's in the 80's down here today =).....it will get there soon....wishing you warm thoughts!!!!

Amy - Thanks, I agree!

Patty - I am with you and Kristina too, I have heard the 60" rule too but occasionally it won't work and you have to go a little higher or lower.  It's a good guideline though!
