Better known in Central Texas as LISD, the Leander Independent School District serves over 34,000 students. Those new to Central Texas sometimes mistaken Leander ISD as only serving Leander. The boundary lines actually include areas in North West Austin, Round Rock, Cedar Park, Leander, Georgetown and Volente.
School districts can be a bit confusing to those new to the area. My first house in Texas was in Round Rock. We lived in Round Rock, school was in Austin and Leander was the district; all were in Williamson County. I now live in Cedar Park, kids schools are in Cedar Park, Leander is the district, schools are Williamson County and our home is in Travis County. Whew!
You may be wondering why does this matter? If schools are part of your home search it will matter! I recently heard someone say they bought a home in North Leander because they heard Leander ISD has one of the best music programs. They were a little surprised to learn they didn't have to go so far north to obtain that. Why does the county matter? Charter schools have a growing presence in Central Texas and some have residency requirements.
Schools not a factor for you? You still may want to know what the boundary lines are and what school your zoned to. School boundary lines frequently have a large impact on property values. Given the zig zagged boundaries some neighborhoods may falsely appear that everyone attends the same school. When you are reviewing comparables with your agent you should ask the question... did all these homes attend the same schools as the home I am looking at? Not just elementary, but middle and high school? For example, picture a neighborhood split between two elementary schools. The north portion of the neighborhood attend an exemplary elementary school in the neighborhood. The south portion attend an elementary school with a rating of mets standard and requires a 15 minute bus ride. The homes on the north side sell for an average of 5% more. This scenario is all over North West Austin & suburban neighborhoods in Central Texas.
I am frequently asked which school district is the best. The answer is, as most things in real estate, it depends.
