Above and Beyond...Better Yet, Over the River and Through the Woods

Ok, I'm exaggerating a little. There was no river--it would be better described as a gully and the woods were just trees in the backyard--however, it was a long hike. But wait a minute, I'm getting way ahead of myself here!

Above and beyond..over the river and through the woodsA couple of years ago we were the listing agent for a high end, 4,000 square foot home. We got the house under contract very quickly and was scheduled to close the day before the July 4th weekend. Unfortunately it was one of those situations when things were not going smoothly. Murphy's Law was hard at work.

Our client had scheduled a cleaning of the house for the late afternoon the day before closing. He and his wife were out of town. Unfortunately he forgot that he had taken the key from the cleaning lady the previous week! We received a call from the seller at 4:30 in the afternoon, "Could you let the cleaning lady in?" Of course, we answered. When we got there 20 minutes later we found a very pregnant woman sitting in the shade of a tree in front of the house, sweating profusely. The temperature was 102 degrees and humid!,

We let her in. She said her help was on the way so not to worry about the cleaning. The air conditioning was working in the house so we said fine, call us when you are finished.

We left, but 15 minutes later we received another call from the now panicked cleaning woman. There was no water to the house! Oops, the owner had turned off the water a day early and had forgotten that as well!

We drove back and assessed the situation (I always talk like that!).  We tried calling the water company but they could not be reached. What a surprise. The cleaning people did have buckets...so I started going house to house trying to find someone to let us have some water. I finally found a neighbor at home who said I could use his hose to fill my buckets. Great!

Well, these were very large lots so the hike between homes was about 300 feet through the trees, the aforementioned gully and finally back to the house. In 102 degrees. Carrying two full buckets of water. Too many times to remember. I was kind of a hot mess. Literally.

The house got cleaned, with our help, and we did end up closing on time. Quite the adventure, over the river and through the woods!

Tom,

Great story, I think that you were definitely above and beyond in facilitation the whole thing and making it work.  You are right, it is the norm for many here on AR.  A

Roy--I'd like to lose a few pounds! How did you know? LOL.

Fred--It was an extremely hot day! I was just thinking about you, Fred Griffin  and how much you must have enjoyed Saturday's game. As I was watching I realized it was the game we all had hoped for! (Except for the outcome!)

R & A--Thanks for stopping by. It really is Above and Beyond Day on AR! You're right, it does become "just what we do".

Chris Ann--I know from being on AR for awhile that these experiences are surprisingly common! You can tell we're all in it for the money...LOL

Amanda--We all have stories don't we! This went under contract in one day and it was downhill from there. One glitch after another...but it closed on time!

Anna--I've never been so hot!!

Tom, it probably would have felt pretty good if you had poured at least one of them over your head to cool off.

Good morning Tom. Each time I read a post on this topic, there are so many wows, this one is not different. Certainly above and beyond.

Tom, and no one got heat exhaustion? I'm amazed. Pregnant, 102 degrees, no water, I can't believe you guys just didn't say, hey, let's call it a day.

Every single person involved went above and beyond, to say the LEAST--just like Joe said.

Susan--That was quite the surprising phone call!

Evelyn--Why didn't I think of that?

Tammie--We were glad when that one was over!!

Joe--Thanks. You may have gotten the correct idea that this was not a smooth transaction!

Gayle--What's even crazier was that we were rushing to get a new roof completed on the house earlier on the same day! Talk about crunch time. The roofers were just about passed out and had to take breaks about every half hour. Crazy.

Seriously, this is tough to beat. You really did go "above and beyond." All of you - glad there was no need to birth the baby out there, the first things they call for are "towels and WATER!" :)

Tom, I can only imagine. It's one thing to "do the work" but doing it in 102 degree humid temps is another.  I'll be you sweat a bucket or two. You clearly did what needed to be done.  The sellers left you in a pickle and you sliced it and served it well.
