Coachella Valley Electrical Services - IID vs Edison

The Coachella Valley is serviced by two major electrical companies. Southern California Edison serves the Western half of the valley including Palm Springs, Rancho Mirage, Indian Wells, and most of Palm Desert. The Eastern half of the valley includes La Quinta, Indio, Coachella, & Thousand Palms, and is serviced by Imperial Irrigation District (IID.) 

A major geographical point that divides the two utilities is Washington Street. If you are going South on Washington Street, homes on the right side or to the West are serviced by Edison and homes on the left side or to the East are serviced by IID.

Both utilities service residential and commercial markets as well as offer energy efficiency and rebate programs.  The big difference between the two electrical companies is really soley in the rates. People looking for a second home or relocating to the area may not be aware of this.

IID is proposing a rate increase that would start in January 2015. The above chart provided by IID and includes their proposed rate increase of 7% on average for residential services. As it stands, IID offers some of the lowest electrical rates in Southern California.

If your looking at two residential homes of comparable size & amenities and one home is located in Rancho Mirage and the the other is in La Quinta, the home in La Quinta will by far have lower electrical costs. Some clients have a particular neighborhood or city that they desire to be in and this difference won't play an important part in their decision. But I have informed many clients about this difference and they had no idea. For those who don't already have a preferred location picked out, this can be one of the deciding factors where they choose to live.
