I Don’t Have Anything to Do

I Don’t Have Anything to Do

I ran into an agent I’ve known for years at the grocery store the other day and we both asked our normal “how’s business” question. His response made me pause for a minute – it wasn’t one I’d ever expect to hear. He said he doesn’t have any buyers or sellers at this time and didn’t have anything to do. This is the annual slowdown that I see every year so I understand not having as much to do but, to say nothing is just unreal to me.

Juggling 8-10 clients at a time is completely different than 2-3 but, even with the slowdown I always have something to do. There hasn’t been a day since I got into real estate that I don’t wake up and have items that need to get taken care of. When the annual slowdown comes that’s a time for me to work on notes for Christmas cards, start getting tax documents in order, catch up on file organization from the summer rush, and plan for next year. That’s in addition to the daily tasks that are on the list; follow up calls, listing pulls, blogging, etc.

Planning your business takes consistent effort and in Real Estate no matter how many clients you have there’s always something to do. If I didn’t have any clients I’d hope one thing on my list would be prospecting but, then again that should be an everyday type item. I don’t have anything to do are words that will never come out of my mouth as long as I’m in Real Estate.

There is ALWAYS something to do if you're a real estate agent! Especially if you're a broker like me. There's always contracts to review, agents to meet, marketing materials to get out, etc. I rarely even get to take more than a few vacation days every year. So to have nothing to do seems very odd to me.

Time for him to get some CE hours in.  Or, he could do a lot of previewing.  Or, he could improve his web presence.  Or, he could volunteer for some open houses.  Or, he could . . . . .  I suspect his problem is motivation, not business.  There's always business.

Good afternoon Amanda,

I have to agree that there is always something to do; FSBO's, expireds and sphere of influence.

Make yourself a great day.

I completely agree, Amanda! There are always a laundry list of tasks that can be accomplished when there is a slowdown in clients.

Amanda~ That does seem like a strange response. I've NEVER been in a situation where there wasn't something I needed to do for our business.

Michael, haha I love the way you think. He probably was.

Nicole, I agree, there's always something to do!

Lenn, you're right, there's always business.

Raymond, I think so too, just have to be motivated and you'll have plenty to do.

Well said Beth!!

Anita, it's a time to catch up from when we are slammed!

Donna, me either and I don't plan on having that problem.

Patricia, thank you :)

Rebecca, at the very least it would give him something to do ;)

Gabe, LOL!

Amanda, there IS always something to do, whether you have current clients!  The web site always could use some tweaking, new apps to check out, write a newsletter, on and on and on!

Nothing to do?  Sounds like he needs to be in a different line of work.  If nothing is happening, you need to MAKE IT HAPPEN!  This dude needs to shake things up a bit or get out of the business.

Amanda, I am with you that I always have something I can be doing. Some days are crazier than others but i really like a slower day to do the catch up items and do a little planning.

Joan, I agree, even when I think I'm caught up there's more to do!

Roger, YES! Make it happen!

John, I agree, especially this summer.

Debbie, I like a slower day to catch up too. Stresses me out when I don't have time to get organized.
