Much of my childhood was spent in Asbury Park and Wanamassa, a small town just over the bridge from AP. One of our most celebrated residents was Tim Hauser (yes THE Tim Hauser, of Manhattan Transfer). Occasionally, Tim would take pity on my, and give me a ride home from APHS (about 2 miles from my home). This was quite a thrill since Tim was four years older than me, and worked summers at the Monte Carlo Pool (long gone). In those days, nice girls didn't date boys that much older than them, but I did feel like quite the hot shot riding in his car. Tim and Tom Picardo (Tommy West, producer of Jim Croce's music) were dear friends, and Tim talked Tommy into coming to my friend's birthday party, in Asbury Park. We were shocked that they showed up, and stunned that they brought their guitars, and sang all night! We had no idea how lucky we were. Note: Yvonne's mom didn't think this was nearly as cool as we did. We both got heated lectures from both our parents about "what older boys want from younger girls."
My wonderful friend, Tim, passed away a week ago, and I am flooded with memories of a joyful time in my life. I would only see Tim once again ---about four years ago --- at a club in NYC playing with Manhattan Transfer. They were as magnificent as ever, and Tim's voice was still magic. I regret not hearing it more.
