Where Does Auburn Washington Rank in Housing Affordability?

Auburn WA Housing AffordabiityAccording to the 2012 census, median income in Auburn is just under $50k. And yet, quick research on our MLS illustrates the current median sold price for Auburn homes thus far in 2014 is $276,755!! (good grief!)

An absolutely fascinating blog post that compares housing affordability by zip code was quoted today by the National Association of Realtors via the Realtor Magazine.

With thanks to the Movoto blog folks, take a quick look at their infographic and explanation, then plug in your own zip code and see where it ranks. The higher the number, the less affordable. The lower the number, the more affordable. Be sure to read through their very informative blog post to understand the methodology behind the numbers.

After reading, I think I need to move to North Dakota (yikes! .... probably not ...). But then I've long expounded on how expensive it is to live in our area. My personal zip code in Auburn Washington comes up at the very high end of the affordability scale, which makes sense when comparing household incomes to housing prices.

Of course, you must have income ... so if your current job/wage can't be earned in these more affordable areas, the whole idea of moving to a less expensive area is moot. (just sayin')
