The warm summer days in Santa Cruz may have passed, but for surfers around the world the crisp fall air signals the time to shred the waves at Steamer Lane. The format for this years Coldwater Classic will follow the format from 2013's competition where 16 unsponsored surfers will compete for the chance of a lifetime. The winner of the Coldwater Classic will be given a contract worth $50,000 for travel expenses and contest fees to make their World Championship dreams come closer to reality. This years competition will take place over two days of optimal surfing conditions during the window of October 28th to November 1st.

The O’Neill history is one of many aspects that contribute to the Santa Cruz surf community and lifestyle. Around the 1930’s surfers from Southern California made their way up north and spread the love of surfing to local Santa Cruz teens. From there the Santa Cruz Surfing Club was developed and people can now visit the Mark Abbott Memorial Lighthouse Surfing Museum for the full history of surfing in Santa Cruz.

A short yet breathtaking walk from the museum takes you along West Cliff to a famous surfing monument of a male surfer standing in front of his board, overlooking a prime surfing spot. This statue is dedicated to all surfers, past, present and future.

Many locals say that walking along West Cliff is their favorite scenic route. The waves crashing on the cliffs, the echoing sounds of seals, and the friendly neighborhood entices locals and visitors to return for a stroll along West Cliff. Here there are also two dog friendly beaches and tide pools. There are also many trendy, local businesses about a five minute drive from West Cliff like Santa Cruz Mountain BreweryKelly’s French Bakery, and Johnny Rice Custom Surfboards. When you reach the end of West Cliff you come upon the stunning Natural Bridges State Beach. This beach has a famous natural bridge, tidepools filled with ocean critters, picnic areas, and a Monarch Butterfly Natural Preserve.
