Has buying a house become NORMAL again?

Has buying a house become NORMAL again by Richard Weisser. After years of prognosticators heralding the demise of home ownership in the United States, the consuming public seems to be laying that dire prediction to rest.

The simple truth is that Americans, for the most part, still want to own their homes, their cars, their furniture and anything else that could be leased.

I know that my personal experiences are anecdotal and I do not present my conclusions as scientific fact.

But I am getting more calls from young, first time buyers than at any other time in my career. They are entering the real estate market without trepidation.

To me, that bodes well for the future of home ownership!

I went through a batch of first time home buyers a few years back.  Now, our prices have gone up and kids can't afford to get a home in our town so they go about 8 miles north.

We have experienced the best year ever in real estate.  We've been going as hard and fast as we can since January.   Yep, I'd say people still have the American dream of owning a home.

Richard Weisser - I can't even tell you how many articles I've read the last two years telling us how the Millenials only want to rent and never own and that the next up-and-coming generations won't care so much about home ownership. But somehow I keep getting approached by the younger generation about buying a home.

Yes, I may even have bought that notion myself for a while. But what I see for myself tells me otherwise!  Just goes to show you that many of these theories are just that, and many do not stand the test of time!

I don't know what is normal anymore.  I guess it is what the media tells us is.

Hi Richard, Our market has slowed some but expct it to pick up again before year end. There are wonderful ways for any qulaified buyer to take advantage of low rates and prices that are for now, flattening out some.

Four years ago, my "millenials" were 21 and 23 and neither were of a mindset to be homeowners.  Now at 25 and 27 things are different...age, income, wisdom and a little distance from the housing bust has given them a new confidence.

Sure, there are millenials who aren't interested; and there are plenty who are keen.

I'd see the 2014 market more "normal" than in the past decade or so, which I see as healthy.  Sure, I loved the go-go days, but that balloon surely is non-sustainable in anything, be in a r.e. market or anything else.  So, I'll take normal 2014 anyday.

As Real as Real Estate Gets!

I am seeing different things in different areas. In Larchmont, people are looking to purchase and we are still seeing multiple bidding. In New Rochelle,  it seems to take forever for a buyer to make up his/her mind..really picky... At the end of the day though, just as you mention, it is  great time in which to buy a home and those who can, should take advantage of same.
