You may find that you need someplace to go on Tuesday to get away from all of the exit polls and other political news that will no doubt be filling the airwaves on Tuesday. Might I suggest that you stop by the 2014 Northeast Healthy Living Expo between 9:30 am and 12:30 pm at Ellis Technical High School, Upper Masple Street, Danielson, CT.
This Healthy Living Expo is sponsored by the Senior Resources Agency on Aging for Eastern CT. Their offices are located in Norwich. They put on at least 4 of these expos each year and for the past several years, my hearing loss support group has participated in the expo. We provide information about hearing loss and some tips and ideas to determine if your hearing is becoming a problem. We also provide some information how people with "normal" hearing can better communicate with someone who has hearing difficulties. We also provide presentations on the same topics at senior centers, assisted living centers, the VA Hospitals in CT, and we are looking to expand our base to include a number of civic groups around the state.
Our group is Hearing Loss Association of America, Eastern CT Chapter and we are the local affiliate for Hearing loss of Americal, based in Bethesda, MD. It is quite an active advocacy group for people with hearing loss. It is celebrating its 35th anniversary and was founded in 1979 by Howard "Rocky" Stone who, at the time he lost his hearing, was an operative for the CIA. Our group, HLAA-ECC, was formed in 2012 and meets at the Phillips Communication Sciences Building on the campus of UCONN in Storrs. We meet once a month and are otherwise involved in a number of projects that include an effort to install an induction loop at the Harriet S. Jorgensen Theatre at UCONN in Storrs. What is an induction loop you ask, and that is a blog unto itself for another time. Suffice it to say that it is a type of assistive listening system for people with hearing difficulties.
In any event, if you are in the area of Danielson on Tuesday morning, please stop by and say "Hello". I will be looking for you! Protect your hearing!
