What better way to kick off the Days of Darkness than a sampling of the delights of the Internet, the greatest free entertainment toy ever invented. Here are my favorites from the past couple of weeks:
Fireworks
It doesn't get better than this fireworks display , from Saitama, Japan, featuring the word's heaviest firework shell, and while watching the video below isn't the same as actually being there, it's still pretty awesome. Full screen please.
Windows 93

It's hard to believe that Windows 95 was released almost 20 years ago. If you were around then, or if you have a touch of geekiness, you'll enjoy this simulation of Windows 93, the product that never was. It's functional, so you can click on the icons for a funny and infuriating trip down an imaginary memory lane.
Amazing Stunts
It has been a Grab Bag tradition of sorts to bring you fantastic videos of daredevil skill, such as Danny Macaskill's stunt bike rides, lunatics in wing suits, and so on. We're highly pleased to present Alex Siegfried, the Tony Hawk of wheelbarrows. Enjoy!
Goldenboy! from Hä Wie on Vimeo.
ello
You may have heard of ello, the new social media site. It's different.
Here's their Manifesto:
Your social network is owned by advertisers.
Every post you share, every friend you make, and every link you follow is tracked, recorded, and converted into data. Advertisers buy your data so they can show you more ads. You are the product that’s bought and sold.
We believe there is a better way. We believe in audacity. We believe in beauty, simplicity, and transparency. We believe that the people who make things and the people who use them should be in partnership.
We believe a social network can be a tool for empowerment. Not a tool to deceive, coerce, and manipulate — but a place to connect, create, and celebrate life.
You are not a product.
I've been on there for a couple of weeks, and I'm still trying to figure out how to connect with what's going on. It's full of interesting content, but still very much in its infancy. Ello is invitation-only at this point, but I've got some invites left, so if you'd like to see what it's all about, send me your e-mail address and I'll sign you up - first come, etc.
