Christmas tree cutting time again in Colorado, get your permits

Christmas tree cutting time again in Colorado, get your permits - WOW, this one really snuck up on me this year. Every year since my wife and I have been together we have gone out and cut our own Christmas tree, and we will be heading out again this year to do the sam!st year cutting a Christmas Treee.

We usually go online and register for our permit, and unfortunately we missed the deadline for early online registration for Jefferson County, but we can still drive up Highway 285 just a few short miles Southwest  of Denver and pick up our permits. We have gone to the Buffalo Creek area for at least 20 of those years, and sadly a forest fire raged through the area about 17 years ago, this is the big reason the forest service allows tree cutting, to thin areas that might be hazardous should a fire get started.

If you are new to Colorado and want to experience a wonderful tradition, or start your own, I highly recommend taking the family up to the mountains for a day and cutting your own tree. When we lived in the mountains we would pick one from our own lot, the boys loved going outside and helping us select the tree, after we moved down into the city we kept the tradition alive and now we have another young couple that has joined us and look forward to making it a part of their annual holiday season ritual.

I think that everyone should at least try getting their own tree from the forest. It can be a wonderful experience for many families if they were only to give it a chance John.

Last year was the first year I've had a tree in decades.  I get mine from a Rotary Club who has a tent. We can't grow them here.

Chris Griffith So no tree at all, or no live tree? Just curious, my wife is born on Christmas so the tree is a very big deal for her.

John -- That is a great tradition. I went out and searched for the perfect tree for many years and it was such fun.  No longer do it, though. I am searching now for a new artificial one as I like to change it every few years.

John, cutting your own tree down for your home is quite special, but they do need to get the permit.  Great post!

I have an artificial tree for years and I'm ok with that. Btw, my daughter already pulled it into the house and started decorating it. She thinks, it is never too early to remind us about presents:)

Inna Ivchenko I assume you have a young daughter, although she sounds like my wife, who just loves everything about the Christmas season

Barbara Altieri I will have to take a picture of our tree when it is done and post it, usually a 17 foot tall tree,  some years it is more difficult to find that perfect tree, but the hot chocolate, the hot cider and all the little kids running around the mountains, something special.

Joan Cox Thank you, and hopefully we can get together again before the holidays
