Monsanto on Maui - ground zero?
Most of you have heard about Monsanto and genetically engineered seeds and crops. Did you know that Monsanto is growing those corn seeds right here on Maui? Enough to supply the whole country with GE seed corn. Where does this happen? In Kihei, on the south shore. I don't think a lot of people realize this, and the effect it's having on our environment, and the people living here.
Did you know they are able to spray dangerous toxic chemicals in excessive amounts, directly upwind of houses and condos, with no notice to residents? Maybe even a condo where you like to spend a few weeks every year? Would this impact your desire to spend your vacation dollars on Maui?
Vote YES or NO on the GMO initiative. Right now Maui is in the middle of a political battle between people who want to slow this madness down, and people who want to keep on with business as usual. That business being the widespread application of unhealthy pesticides into the air and ground, and anything else standing in the way, or downwind. If you've ever been to Kihei then you know that wind blows all day long, carrying dust particles and dirty air into your beautiful space. You know what else... it's happening on all these islands, not just Maui.
On the one side, the SHAKA movement is concerned about what is going on in the Hawaiian Islands because Big AG and Biotech is having their way with us and our lands. SHAKA wants a moratorium so we can step back and take a better look at what's happening, before it's too late.
On the other side, Monsanto, Dow, Syngenta, and the like. Large well funded Agribiz interests and toxic chemical purveyors. They claim they need to "feed the world" and make "better living through chemistry". At any expense. Are you buying it?
Right here on Activerain I'm seeing ads paid for by Monsanto and company, decrying the SHAKA movement and their goals. Really? This "citizen's group/Monsanto" has spent over $7,000,000 in advertising for this election regarding the GMO initiative on Maui. Yes that's SEVEN MILLION DOLLARS or more, which is a record-breaking sum for Hawaii. That money could go a long way to feeding some hungry people.
So in case you come to Maui on a vacation, and you wonder why you're having unusual health issues, ask yourself if you're downwind of Monsanto Ground Zero. Wake up and smell the glyphosate! It's almost as refreshing as Napalm in the morning. You won't ever know when they're spraying, because they won't notify you.
Tired of living in Kihei? How about moving to the north shore, on the windward side:
Or maybe you'd prefer living upcountry, high above it all:
