You Decluttered Your Chicagoland Home.

 What Now?

http://www.donationtown.org/     I'm just guessing, but I'm betting there are thousands of videos and real estate articles about the importance and wisdom of "decluttering" your home prior to putting it up for sale ...

Magazines, blogs, and social media are all filled with tips, suggestions, and ideas to help you accomplish this task. There are even handy checklists available to help you kick-start your decluttering.  (Click HERE for one of those checklists.)

But after you've cleaned, winnowed-out, sorted, recycled, thrown-away, and decluttered your home's drawers, closets, garages, basement, and attic ... what in the world do you do with all that stuff?  How do you get rid of it all?

You can always try a Garage or Yard Sale.  But if you live in a colder region of the U.S. (like here in Chicagoland), cold weather or more severe weather conditions may limit the period of time available to you for hosting such an event.  Then what?

If you have a large amount of items for sale, an auction is something you might consider.  "Swapping" or a "swap event" to trade those items you have for what others have could work well for you too.  To do this, arrange something locally among friends/family ... or go online to:  Swap.com.

Consignment shops (to find a Consignment/Re-Sale Shop near you, click HERE)  are also a great way to sell unwanted items and earn some money while doing so.  eBay, eBay Classifieds, Craigslist, Amazon, other online sites, and even local newspaper ads can provide opportunity for sales.

In the greater Chicagoland area, there are a myriad of options for you to consider as you try to rid yourself of no-longer-needed, unused, new and gently-used items.  Consider donating what you can to your local community's organizations, churches, and even pet/animal shelters.

But afterwards, if you're still in need of ideas:

Below you'll find the names of some Chicagoland organizations, businesses, and charities ... and links to their websites ... that accept, or will even pick-up, items.  Remember, not all organizations and charities accept all items, so visit their websites or contact them directly to make sure you're donating properly.

http://www.mokena.org/index.aspx?NID=220

For more ideas and help, you can also visit the Donation Town website, put your Zip Code in, and schedule a convenient pick-up for your goods.

De-cluttering your home prior to its sale ... or just to re-organize your life and living space ... is a wise decision.  And there are so many great opportunities and ways to accomplish that by putting your used, no-longer-needed items to good use in the Chicagoland area.

You Decluttered Your Chicagoland Home.  What Now?  Roll-up your sleeves and tackle your clutter today.  You can put a little money back in your pocket, or greatly benefit those that are in need ...

I'm going to throw my 2 cents in on the donation side of this conversation Gene.  Because I've been on the receiving end... when my home was hit by a tornado 22 years ago this month... the Salvation Army was awesome.  And research in the years that followed proved they were as great as I thought.  Their CEO makes a very low salary and so much of what they get is passed on to those in need.

And it's a great time of the year to remind me (and others) that we should clear out and clean up.  And for me donate is what feels right.

Gene- excellent post. Many of my clients ask the same question- now what do I do with everything.  We have an organization here called Faith Farm.  It helps people with drug issues and provides an opportunity for them to improve their lives and return to their families and work after they graduate.

Anna Banana Kruchten ... Thank you so much for the BananaTude honor.  And you're so right ... "On your mark - get set - declutter time!"

I agree, Tammy Lankford ... it's what we did with the majority of the items we "decluttered" when we downsized from our former home.  To tell the truth, it felt good to know they would find a new good "home".  So glad that you were the recipient of someone's kindness and help those 22 years ago ...

Jenna Dixon ... I think a great idea ... and I'm sure many of your clients would think so too.  Perhaps a handy handout?

There are so many wonderful opportunities to help those in need or in pain, Kathy Streib  ... and it doesn't have to cost a dime.  And they are right in our own backyards!

Good morning Gene. I have the Salvation Army on speed dial. We end up purchasing home to flip that often have furniture and stuff. They have been great to pick up what may be usable.
