New Mayor, New Governor...But No New Urban Rail For Austin

This election year required many decisions from Austinites.  A new mayor, a new Governor for the first time in 14 years, transportation bonds, community college bonds, and many more issues. Whew!  A lot of changes for our growing metro and state.

See all these cranes downtown?  They each represent extreme growth in our community.

Tonight Texas welcomes a new Governor, Repulican Greg Abbott.

Austin will be welcoming a new mayor.  However, after what looked like a very strong lead for Adler, the last minute voting and provisionals are too close to call.  Surprise, there will be a run off election in December.

But, it look's like the new light rail did not get approved.  We currently have the Metro Rail which serves a track from Leander to downtown Austin.  While this rail service has been slow to grow it is quickly gaining new riders as the traffic congestion and growth continues in North Austin.  The new North Woods neighborhood in Avery Ranch is building many new homes that will allow commuters to walk to catch a train downtown or even near the Domain. As Charles Schwab increases local employment numbers by more than 800 and moves near the Domain, I suspect the Metro Rail will quickly become even more popular.

Most residents in Travis & Williamson County agree we need transportation solutions in Central Texas. The proposed plans lack of votes simply suggests it failed to meet what many believe is the best way to spend such a large amount of money and solve traffic issues.  We will be voting on transportation again and I presume we will have new plans to choose from.  Hopefully next time plans that voters can accept, afford and that will make a difference.

Here in Maryland we are hopeful for a new regime but it's too close to call at this point now.

Patricia Kennedy, it looks like legalizing marijuana is on the move across the country.  June Piper-Brandon, it turns out our mayoral race was too close to call in Austin as well.  Very surprising, at 7:00 Adler was ahead by over 12%, and with last minute voting and provisionals in play, they are saying we will need to do a run off election for Austin mayor in December.  Either way, we will have a new mayor... but interesting twist.
