Poisonous Caterpillars in Central Texas

Puss caterpillars, also known as asp, have been prevalent in Austin this year.  As if the rattlers, coral snakes and scorpions weren't enough... we also have fuzzy caterpillars that are sending people to emergency rooms.  They typically are more common in summer, and in 2014 we saw a larger population than usual.

I've lived in Central Texas for nearly a decade and have never seen one of these little buggers.

Until today...  It's November?  Apparently not only are these guys rampid this year, they are sticking around.  This one is in my neighbors front yard tree.  The tree in which our sons were climbing.  Her son's hand came about 3 inches away from a trip to the ER.  Being the super paranoid critter mama I am, my seven year old twins had been shown pics and knew not to mess with them.

Hopefully a rattler and a coral snake are not next on my list of visitors.  After years in Arizona I can handle the scorpions.

Ranee: I had no knowledge of the poisonous caterpillars in Texas. Very good information and something newcomers to your State should be aware of for safety's sake.

Thanks for reading Norm.  We have a lot of newbies and it is important to make them aware of the uniqueness of the area.

Thanks Beth Atalay.  Many things poisonous in Central Texas!  The beautiful, green hills and flowing rivers and natural springs are enjoyed by many animals :)
