Mount Vernon Was Washington's Pride & Joy

A visit to Mount Vernon with a group from The George Washington Society, Ltd. of Wilmington, Delaware was a real treat last week. We had a VIP tour of the grounds and the mansion, culminating with two officers of the society laying a wreath at the tomb of George and Martha Washington.

Since no photos are allowed in the mansion, you will have to look online (photos of Mount Vernon interior) to see the latest in recreating the home as it looked at the time of Washington's occupancy. The grounds are also interesting, since Washington took great interest in his farm and growing the best varieties of fruits and vegetables, and even had an "Orangerie" or greenhouse in which to grow things like oranges and lemons, which would otherwise not survive a Virginia winter. It burned down in the 19th century, but has been re-created from plans filed erroneously elsewhere.

 Mount Vernon

There is also a museum which hosts dioramas telling the story of Washington's life and the Revolutionary War. One interesting feature (for fans of "Bones" on TV) is the use of forensic science to re-create mannequeins of Washington at several periods of his life. I loved seeing the blue eyes and ruddy complexion of a young Washington seated on his favorite horse--very lifelike!

An important aspect of Mount Vernon's history for those of us in the historic home field is this lady:

The Mother of the Historic Preservation Movement: The founder of the Mount Vernon Ladies Association (MVLA), Ann Pamela Cunningham created the organization responsible for saving and restoring Mount Vernon. In doing so, she established one of the earliest preservation and heritage organizations in the United States.. Cunningham led the organization as Regent from its inception in 1853 until she stepped down in 1874.

That sounds like a very interesting and fun trip, what a great opportunity.  I always enjoy the historical pieces of our country, especially around the Revolutionary war, which of course the northeast holds plenty of.
