Is it Me or has Formica Come a Long Way?

You've Come a Long Way Baby!

There use to be a time when formica countertops were solid colors. You could have white or beige. I used to work at Home Depot and I ordered them all day long. Eventually some colors were added. Yep, you could have green, brown, black, or pink. LOL.

Later as people fell in love with Granite countertops, those on non-granite budgets demanded Formica to step up their game. Along came styles that had more of looks similar to granite.  Then came softer edges and beveled looks. Yep, no more cracking off the side and cutting your arm as you walked by. We all have done this once or twic in our life!

When looking at MLS pictures, sometimes it is very difficult to tell if it is a formica top, granite or Corian. If you forget to check the listing information you often are surprised it is formica when you arrive.

While there is still a battle of what the ideal kitchen has, I think we can agree that today's Formica is a long way from yesterday's Formica. And I for one am grateful for that!    ;-)

You said it best, not everyone is on a granite budget Tammy. You are right the Formica, Wilsonart, and others have come a long way.

Tammy you make a very good point. I think some of these materials are now truly the best choice for owners who can't afford (or don't want to spend) the cost of the high-end options. The new Formica patterns are a big improvement on the old stuff!

I am embarrassed to admit I have had to go back to a home or two to verify after looking at my pictures .  Guessed they were granite without really paying attention.  Mark

Tammy, you are correct, not everyone is on a high end budget when it comes to counter tops! Enjoy your day!

I wish I would have gotten a picture of a house I was in last week. It was gorgeous. You would have sworn the countertops were granite unless you got up close. I can only imagine where they will be in another 10 years.

That's a great - and attractive option - for many people.  The example in your photo looks terrific.
