Winterize Your Long Island Home Now

By

There's a chill in the air here on Long Island and now is a good time to start winterizing your home or condo. Here's some suggestions for your Fall "To-Do" list:

1. Winterize The Sprinkler System: This will prevent the pipes from freezing, and turn off the outdoor water faucets.

2. Check The Heating System: There is usually a smell as you turn it on, but if it lasts too long, call a professional to check-out the system.

3. Reverse Your Ceiling Fans: Turn it clockwise and the fan will push warm air downward to recirculate through-out the house.

4. Check The Fireplace: If it hasn't been swept for a while, call a professional chimney cleaner. It's a good idea to get a cap so that animals will be kept out.

5. Clean Those Gutters: Clogged drains can back up water that freezes. Clean out the dead leaves and other stuff in your gutters so water can drain freely.

6. Check Alarms: Smoke detectors and carbon-monoxide detectors batteries should be tested and replaced if necessary.

7. Doors And Windows: Apply weather stripping to doors and windows where it is necessary, to block cold air from entering the home.

8. Don't Forget: Keep flashlights handy, get the snow blower tuned, keep some sand/ice-melt available, and maybe this is the year to invest in a generator (that's what Larry just bought)...Just in Case!

Great suggestion even for the warmer climate of NC. I never knew that about ceiling fans--but then I don't have any except on my porches! (And oh those dirty gutters that keep popping up on my inspection reports!)

Larry and Sheila, winter is almost here and this is very timely advice. Better to be ahead of the game than have problems in the dead of winter.

Good morning Larry and Sheila, this really is a very good preventative maintenance checklist. Nobody wants to deal with the issues that results from not doing schedule maintenance.

This is very good advice as we prepare for the winter months. We need to buy a bag of ice melt for the sidewalk!

We had better get our irrigation system winterized or we are going to have some frozen lines. Winter is coming.
