There's a chill in the air here on Long Island and now is a good time to start winterizing your home or condo. Here's some suggestions for your Fall "To-Do" list:
1. Winterize The Sprinkler System: This will prevent the pipes from freezing, and turn off the outdoor water faucets.
2. Check The Heating System: There is usually a smell as you turn it on, but if it lasts too long, call a professional to check-out the system.
3. Reverse Your Ceiling Fans: Turn it clockwise and the fan will push warm air downward to recirculate through-out the house.
4. Check The Fireplace: If it hasn't been swept for a while, call a professional chimney cleaner. It's a good idea to get a cap so that animals will be kept out.
5. Clean Those Gutters: Clogged drains can back up water that freezes. Clean out the dead leaves and other stuff in your gutters so water can drain freely.
6. Check Alarms: Smoke detectors and carbon-monoxide detectors batteries should be tested and replaced if necessary.
7. Doors And Windows: Apply weather stripping to doors and windows where it is necessary, to block cold air from entering the home.
8. Don't Forget: Keep flashlights handy, get the snow blower tuned, keep some sand/ice-melt available, and maybe this is the year to invest in a generator (that's what Larry just bought)...Just in Case!
