What To Do with All of those Sanibel Shells!

One of the main reasons people flock to Sanibel Island is because there is an abundance of shells on the beach. It is fun to pick through the mounds of shells to find that perfect lettered olive, shark eye, or colorful scallop. You can end up going home each time with buckets of shells and then having to find a spot for them. There are many craft and display ideas on the internet but I saw a beauty just the other day in my neighborhood…a shell mailboxShell mailbox

Shell mailbox 2Not sure if this mailbox was purchased or made by the owner but what a great idea to show off your beautiful shells and you can enjoy them without cluttering up the house.

One of the best times to shell is soon after a storm due to the churning up of the water and shell beds. Have fun shelling the next time you’re at the beach but remember that it is illegal to take home any live shells from Sanibel and all of Lee County.

Jill, my parents went down to Sanibel Island several times for weeks during the winter and my mom bleached the sand dollars and used them as Christmas tree ornaments.  They looked great with red ribbons and no lights!

We make it easy. You make it home.

That is a great idea, too, Bruce Walter . We used to go out to the sand dollar beds years ago and find big ones.

Hi Jill, when my parents lived in Florida they loved to walk on the beach and gather shells. They had a friend who made the most interesting creatures out of what they found. They were very cool!

I have memories of collecting shells on Sanibel Island. They looked like they were everywhere. I hunted for the best ones. I hope you are enjoying it down there and know you are not missing the 30 degree weather today.

Hi Tom White ... There are so many things to be made with shells and other things found on the beach. Lots of creative people out there.

Hi Debbie Reynolds ...Yes, we're enjoying the 80 plus temps this week. Went to Sanibel for Thanksgiving and sat on the beach. Picked up some trash instead of shells that day! I am missing you guys.
