ENTRY for the FALL SEASON and Defining GRATITUDE CONTEST

Everyone deserves some appreciation!

Defining gratitude.....  With the upcoming holiday, I am inclined to define gratitude as a thankfulness for those who have and are serving our country.  Our Veterans!James R. Green with SelectAnn.com

My step-dad was by far the most influential person in this regard.  He and his friends wrote a book about honor.  Victory Through Valor. It was supposed to be a story of what happened at the Battle of the Bulge but it turned into so much more.  I studied history but never really understood what these brave young men and women endured.  History books water it down and focus on the battle/the dates and not the human aspect.  From Jim's stories, I learned the sacrifices, struggles and the terror of the fighting that most have forgotten.  In his kindness, there was a great compassion for others.  He gave of his time and his talent to teach about the war.

I had the pleasure of being invited to the book signing where I had the opportunity to meet a select few of these special people and their families.   I was in awe of the bravery and dedication of these Veterans.  Some that I had the pleasure to meet and thank are now gone including Jim.  It saddens me to think what they did will be forgotten.  I have great respect and thankfulness for these men and women who gave their time and their lives for a cause greater than themselves.  The pain and suffering they endured on a personal level is nothing less than a miracle.  A miracle for the ones who survived.  A time to be remembered.  So today think about where you are and what you have.  Thank a Veteran for your freedoms.

The plan to show my gratitude is to donate warm scarves to the veterans in my area.   It does not sound like much but I believe the scarf, a smile and a huge thank you will go along way to create some happiness in the lives of these noble men and women.  The goal is to donate as many scarves as I can make between now and the holidays.

Thank you for reading and wish me luck in meeting my goal!

Your step-father seems to have been a great influence on you Ann. That alone may be a wonderful testament!

Ann, I also have a great deal of respect for the "Greatest Generation". I'm fortunate to still have many in my life.
