Winterize Your Long Island Home Now
Don't just ignore article this because it talks about winterizing your Long Island home! You can take all of these tips on how to winterize your home in the Charlotte, North Carolina region and apply them here as well, as our weather gradually cools down. All eight of the winerizing items keeping "popping up" regularly on my inspection reports, so I know way too many homeowners aren't doing much to winterize their homes. But following these steps will help ensure your Charlotte metro area home will be in great shape throughout the winter into the spring 2015 season.
There's a chill in the air here on Long Island and now is a good time to start winterizing your home or condo. Here's some suggestions for your Fall "To-Do" list:
1. Winterize The Sprinkler System: This will prevent the pipes from freezing, and turn off the outdoor water faucets.2. Check The Heating System: There is usually a smell as you turn it on, but if it lasts too long, call a professional to check-out the system.3. Reverse Your Ceiling Fans: Turn it clockwise and the fan will push warm air downward to recirculate through-out the house.4. Check The Fireplace: If it hasn't been swept for a while, call a professional chimney cleaner. It's a good idea to get a cap so that animals will be kept out.5. Clean Those Gutters: Clogged drains can back up water that freezes. Clean out the dead leaves and other stuff in your gutters so water can drain freely.6. Check Alarms: Smoke detectors and carbon-monoxide detectors batteries should be tested and replaced if necessary.7. Doors And Windows: Apply weather stripping to doors and windows where it is necessary, to block cold air from entering the home.
8. Don't Forget: Keep flashlights handy, get the snow blower tuned, keep some sand/ice-melt available, and maybe this is the year to invest in a generator (that's what Larry just bought)...Just in Case!
