Pedestrian Tales From the Middle of the Road, #66

The following is an unfortunate incident that happened Halloween night.  The video above is footage I took myself- as this death wasn't too far from my place and I passed by it on the way home.

Out of respect for the dead here, I'll eschew a question I'd typically ask when reading this story- in wondering why a 14-year-old was trick-or-treating in the first place.  Instead, I'll point out the attitude of the boy- which he undoubtedly learned from watching many adults in similar circumstances.

A 14-year-old boy was hit and killed on Halloween night after he ran out into the road in Apopka, police said.

Brian Orozco and his two friends were headed home from trick-or-treating around 10:30 p.m.  They were waiting to cross Orange Blossom Trail near State Road 436 when Brian was "growing impatient" and went about 150 feet away from a crosswalk and started to cross, said Apopka police Sgt. Ed Chittenden.

He was struck by a southbound vehicle driven by a 18-year-old man.

Brian had a "do not walk" sign and the driver had a solid green light, Chittenden said.

It does not appear the driver was under the influence or speeding, he said. It's unlikely the driver will face any charges.

"Halloween's a horrible time for pedestrians," said Chittenden. "This is another example of why it's important to take those (traffic signals) into consideration."
