Pedestrian Tales From the Middle of the Road, #69

The following tragedy from Halloween is hardly surprising.  As in the photos above that I took one day while watching a couple push their child in a stroller into the path of more than one vehicle, children learn at a terribly young age that walking into traffic is both a way of life- and death.

It's my hope that the neighbor mentioned in this story is prosecuted for his contribution to the death of this child.

Toddler struck by bus, killed while trick-or-treating in Lake Wales

A 2-year-old boy was struck by a bus and killed while trick-or-treating with his grandmother and neighbor Friday evening, a Polk County Sheriff's spokeswoman said.

Dohntae Vasquez was out trick-or-treating with his grandmother, 45, their neighbor, 29, and the neighbor's two children, said Carrie Horstman, a sheriff's office spokeswoman.

The neighbor pushed Vasquez and his two children in a stroller across State Road 27 and realized he dropped his cell phone in the middle of the road, Horstman said.  Vasquez's grandmother had not yet crossed the road.

The neighbor parked the strolled on a strip of grass on the median and told the children to wait as he went back to get it.

Vasquez ran out of the stroller and into the road, and was hit by a bus carrying workers home from Lake Placid, Horstman said.

The bus driver pulled over, Horstman said.  Though the adults tried to resuscitate the boy, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The bus driver was not speeding or impaired, and told deputies she did not see the boy running into the street, Horstman said.  She has not been charged.

YOu can't trust a child to stay where you tell them to stay when in a strange place.

Hi, William:  Thank you for stopping by, and for your comment.  And this isn't the first time a kid's ran into the street like this.  I believe a 4-year-old was killed doing it last year...
