Rails-To-Trails Conservancy is a nation-wide organization that converts old or abandoned rail lines into recreational trails to promote health and wellness. To date, over 1,600 of these trails have been established around the United States with many more proposed.
One of these can be found in the beautiful suburban town of Ridgefield, Connecticut. The Ridgefield Rail Trail begins in downtown Ridgefield and winds 2.3 miles west to the Branchville section of town. Crossing over several roads, there are many other trails that connect to this artery as well as open spaces, streams and even the 38 mile Norwalk River Valley Trail (that is currently under construction).
Bikes and motorized vehicles are prohibited, offering a peaceful way for walkers and runners of all ages to get some exercise. Our four-legged friends perhaps enjoy it the most!
