Prepper Property - How remote is TOO remote?

As more and more people are coming in to Idaho for Prepper properties I get requests for remote properties.

The vast majority of people coming in to North Idaho are coming for the same thing.  People are looking for a bug out property that they can also use for recreation or their new home site.  We pretty much all have the same thought process to survive well in tough times.  The lay of the land, the trees and the location have a lot to do with how private it is.  While it might be your dream to have 500 acres and put your house in the middle of it, those don't come up very often and they aren't cheap.  Sometimes you can have a 10 acre piece that is situated just right and have a thick forest  that you could get lost on and never see or hear a neighbor.  While most of us come up with the idea at some point and time to be way out in the middle of no where and nobody can find us sounds ideal but there are a few things to think about.

What is your definition of remote?  We have some properties that are very remote.  They are off the grid, with the only winter access is a snowmobile, or rough roads that you are dealing with all by yourself. While it may sound perfect at first, think about the everyday life.  Do you have a job to get to or kids in school? Does the sound of using a sled to get your groceries to the house sound daunting.  If so I suggest something a little more accessible.

Maybe something a little out of town where you have your privacy but good accessibilty might be more to your liking.

Mother nature has a funny way of teaching us all leasons and we do have 4 seasons here.  Deciding how remote is too remote is one of the first steps.

Rain: It is best to know the answer to that question before contracting on a property, that is for sure. Being off-grid is great for some but as you point out, you still have to live there on a daily basis.

Good points Rain, fuel and commuting time can add up quickly in some of those remote locations.  We do a lot of work in very remote locations and that daily commute to find an internet connection for sending data can get to be a real burden.

What a beautiful name you have!  I dream of this remote property but one of my chief considerations is a chronic medical condition that requires prescription medication maintenance, access to medical care and pharmacies is a chief concern.  As, I am sure, it should be for many.  Good points to consider.

Thank you Jenna, Yes access to medical services is a big one to consider.  I had a guy the other day that is very disabled and wanted a property that come winter would be a real hardship.  Real easy and nice in the summer nightmare in the winter

Rain, we live on five acres about five miles outside of town. We have next door neighbors who also live on five acres. For some of our friends it's "way out there" in the country. For us, not at all. You're right, your definition of "remote" is where you would have to start!
