An Underwater Fantasyland at Monterey Bay Aquarium

Real Estate Agent with GreatWest Realty DRE# 00827565

For those wishing to make a one tank day trip, from Sacramento, an interesting destination along the Central California coast, provides an underwater Fantasyland, not usually seen unless allowed to break surface.

My family has made several trips to the Monterey Bay Aquarium.  And, even to my old jaded eyes, the wonder of all things great and small, dwelling in a watery environment creates special delight!   There are Sea Otters, Jelly Fish, Sharks, Sea Horses, Anemones, Star Fish and Bat Rays.

Imagine for a minute, that you are standing with the group of people in front of that giant glass enclosure, looking at the multiple thousands of anchovies swimming swiftly in a school.  Out of nowhere arrives a big shark at lightning speed right at them.  The school creates a large hole in its midst as the shark swims through.  We are only left to ponder how many anchovies were part of the shark’s dinner.  Alas, I missed the shot!

If you can allow more than a day, the Monterey Peninsula offers many wondrous sights and adventures.  In addition to the Monterey Aquarium, they include Fisherman’s Wharf, Carmel Mission, The Beautiful 17 Mile Drive, Pebble Beach, Pacific House, just to name a few.

That is one of the best aquariums, and I love the kelp forest also.  What an amazing display, and great work these folks do.  A

Hi Myrl, We have been to Monterey several times but never made it into the aquarium. Hopefully we can go the next trip. There is a Hyatt Carmel Highlands that we love to stay at.

You did an excellent job on those photographs and I'm sure it was hard to walk away. There's something mystical about the jelly fish. I find them to be so tranquil too. A day at the aquarium is the perfect way to spend the day on a cold and rainy day. They would definitely change your mood, wouldn't they?

John - We spent a couple of hours at the Monterey Bay Aquarium, and I concur that the experience can be very relaxing!

Sybil - Me too!  They can be very stress reducing!

Bruce - At one point, I had all my favorite places programed into my Magellan. It was sometimes fun to just jump in the car, and close my eyes, and let Magellan decide where the destination was going to be!

Sheila - For those visiting Monterey, the Aquarium is a delightful place to spend a few hours.

Alexandra - I'm fond of the Kelp Forest too!  And, I like the Sea Horses.

Robert and Yolanda - The Hyatt Carmel Highlands provides great lodging.  I've not stayed there.  I have family and friends in the Carmel-Pebble Beach area.

Patricia - There are areas at the aquarium that I did find very difficult to walk away from.  Totally mesmerizing.

Chris Ann - The Aquarium coupled with so many other sights in the Monterey area, provide a very impressive variety of experiences for the traveler.

Adam and I are heading up that way in about a month to catch the Aimee Mann Christmas show at Santa Cruz. It's more like a spend-the-night trip though. It takes almost 4 hours to get there from Sacramento.

Elizabeth - You're going to need to go over and then down that way from here in Sacramento.  Yes, it's about a 4 hour drive.  It's best to spend the night.  In the past I've been fortunate to have had family and friends who live in the area.

Hi Myrl, One of the reasons it is so pleasant to see and watch sea life is that the many creatures actually live together in harmoney.  Life is added and disappears in the sea but for all intents and purposes, it is still very peaceful, not to mention the sheer beauty. Life in harmony. With man's ability to figure things out, they fail miserably to accept and live in harmony. It seems that peacful living is not within the  human wheelhouse.

Great photos Myrl. Sadly, I've only ever been to California once. I visited a friend of my then husband in Los Angeles. I will be going back in February to visit Anaheim for some training. Not sure how much "play" time I'll have while I'm there.
