Choosing Paint Colors--Not My Favorite Activity

Choosing Paint colors--Not my favorite activityWhen we suggest to one of our clients that they might consider painting their home prior to putting it on the market, we usually look at neutral colors. We're not only talking about off-whites; neutrals can now include many grays, khakis and taupes. We use the standard phrase, "...we want it to appeal to the most number of buyers."

However, when we're showing homes, I find myself gravitating towards the bolder tones--the chocolates, the persimmons, the "spices".

After 7 years in our house, my wife Tammie and I are taking the plunge. We're going to paint our Great Room. I've already painted several rooms in the house, but in this case we're going to hire a painter. The room has a ceiling height of close to 18 feet and while I may be a DIYer, I'm not crazy!

The problem is choosing the color.

We have been using some color collections put together by Sherwin Williams and HGTV. That does help the rooms "flow", colorwise. At least that's what they say... You see, Tammie considers me somewhat "color challenged". Just the other day she said, "Do you own any shirts that aren't blue?"

What to do? I know the difference between painting to sell and painting for your own style, but the decision is now upon us.

I think I'll just leave it up to her. Uh oh...She just called me a coward. And something else!

Tom, hopefully you and your wife will be on the same page when it comes to the color you pick. There certainly is a difference between painting for your own satisfaction, and painting in order to sell a home.

Donna--We've had inertia issues with regards to a few home improvement projects ourselves. LOL.

Troy--I'm pretty sure we will be on the same page, but in the long run it's better (for me) to leave the final decision up to her! Chuckle...chuckle.

Tom.

I would second Kathy on her suggestion.  When we were selecting colors for our home in LA. we had so much light coming in from 14 foot sliding door, that we used swatches to see how it would look in all the different lights...that was the deciding color.

On the blue issue, we have a client that loves blue. and the key is to vary the hues and have accent colors...turne in next week, I will be talking about color combinations.  A

Blue is one of the toughest colors. I had a listing once that was the perfect shade and asked the owners how they came up with it and they fessed that they used a decorator to choose paints.

We've been converted to Sherwin Williams paints too.  As for picking the colors, the hardest part in our house in my husband and I agreeing.  We've picked out a nice palette.  Safari, Burlap, Crabby Apple and Moss Green.  In the bedroom we have Oyster Bay.

Hi Tom - Mary's favorite recommendation is called Nomadic Desert by Sherwin Williams. It gets in a lot of our client's homes, but it's nice enough that we're using it in our home as well. Check it out.

Picking paint colors can be such a challenge - we just went through it and it took longer to choose the color than I thought it would...just so many colors.  Brought the samples homes, then narrowed down the choices, bought sample cans,  etc etc.  Ended up with a Benjamin Moore Aura palette, as we were covering some dark colors and it is just the best for that.

This is so funny.  Sounds like a wonderful room w/ the high ceilings.  Are you going to paint the ceiling too?  You can do some cool stuff there.  You also may choose to do a darker accent wall (if the set up works for that).

BTW, I love blues, too.

Decide on cool or warm tones first.

Hi Tom, Good for you for venturing out but not everyone should pick colors. Get help or let Tammie do it. It is okay to be a little bold and spice it up a bit.

Tom may not think so but we've made some pretty bold choices for colors. In our great room, however, we want to choose something that will work with a new sofa in a couple of years. It seems that we've had builder beige for too long. Kathy Streib we did paint samples on the wall and it looks like Outerbanks is our choice. It's a taupe and much darker than what we currently have.

Tom White - Just when I think I'm getting good at picking paint colors I get a sample color, put it on the wall, and it looks nothing like I thought it would.

Good morning Tom. Picking out paint colors is about as much fun as a sharp stick in the eye. Not quite my cup of tea.

R & A--Thanks and I look forward to your post!

Chris--We saw some great blue/gray/greens for one of the bedrooms. I think we're going with a shade of gray in there!

Chris A.C.--We mostly agree on colors. Sounds like you made some great choices.

Dick--Thanks for the suggestion. We'll check it out.

Susan--Fun. Kind of...

Debbie G.--I love the blues, but we're not headed that direction for the great room...it wouldn't work with our furniture.

Debbie R.--I enjoy giving input but I know where my bread is buttered!

Tammie--Yep, the colors we're leaning towards are on the bolder side!

Nicole--It's impossible to tell with the little color chips. We're putting up some large spots on the wall in various light. It is a little scary.

Michael--I like that comparison!

Joe--You are a brave man!

Whoever thought paint color would be such a hot topic? It can be very difficult to get it right.  My wife is trying to choose a color for my office right now and the fluorescent lights create real havoc as some of the tubes have different spectrums.  It's amazing how one color can seem dull, bright, grey, yellow or just plain awful.  We are going to need more paint samples and maybe a professional!

Jack--The different lighting has a huge effect on the color we see. We have CFLs in some lamps that totally change our perception of the color. Yikes.

OH, Tom, I feel your pain! I believe that men only can be color blind, as well...I don't think it's in the females DNA to be color blind. Not that you are! And what a funny post...as I think there are several people who would say, "Yup! I'm with ya!"

I'm a bold gal myself. Once picked a color that matched a rather chartreuse-colored leaf from Fishhawk Lake to paint our (then) home in our den in a suburban neighborhood southwest of Portland. Hey, something must've been right, because we sold the home in 4 hours for $5K over asking price. Pre-bubble-burst.

Tom, coward or smart man?  I’m going with smart man. If Tammie is happy then Tom will be happy. What is the expression?   Happy Wife – Happy Life!  If it were me – I’d let her choose too. I just don’t have that much passion for what color my walls are.  Call me boring!

Tom,  My husband leaves the color selections to me.  Since he refuses to be a part of the decision process, he can't complain if he doesn't like something.  For me color brightens or darkens my mood.  Beige makes me cranky and a little color brightens me right up.  He wouldn't let me paint any of the walls in our brand new home in 2005 for 1 year.  He said the paint was fresh and he didn't want to cover it up.  I let him have that one but day 366 I was busy splashing color.
