Burrowing Owls of Cape Coral
Have you noticed the high grass on some lots combined with crossed pieces of wood? These areas may or may not be accompanied by a sign. If you look closely you may see a small owl sitting there. These are the famous Florida Burrowing Owls. There are over 2,500 burrows in Cape Coral and they are protected by the state. The burrows are marked so that they won’t be destroyed accidentally.
Just because a burrow is located on an empty lot doesn’t mean you can’t build a home there though. It is preferable to build the home without disturbing the burrow but if that isn’t practical, the burrow can be destroyed following the issuing of a permit to do so.
More information and sites to view the owls are mapped out for you by the City of Cape Coral.
