My Last Mowing of the Year...I Hope!

My wife Tammie and I live on five acres and we love it. Some of my current friends think I'm crazy for living out in the "country", but it's only about 10 minutes to  the nearest Target, Chili's, Kroger and wine shop!. I mean what else do you need? We have neighbors--but they're not too close. We could have horses and chickens--but we don't. What we do have is a lot of open space which I  mow. Notice the "I". Tammie won't mow, our college age kids won't mow...I mow.

I had to buy a new mower this year. My trusty old Craftsman Riding Mower with a 54" deck bit the dust. I had nursed it along for the last couple of years, taking it to be welded together at the start of each new season. This year it stopped mowing and my repair man said it was time to put it out to pasture. Literally. We told him to keep it and he took it to the scrap metal recycle place where it's probably found new life as a cyclone fence or something.

My Last mowing of the year...I hopeA new mower! I started doing research (because that's what I do) and found that what I really needed was a Zero Turn Riding Mower. Cool! I asked my mower repair man Brad which mower he'd recommend if he were buying a new one. He suggested several to consider, but told me if he had a choice he'd buy a Ferris Mower. Never heard of it, I said.

You can't buy one at Lowes or Home Depot he noted, which disappointed me greatly since I spend so much time in those stores wandering around. Yep, he said, you need to go to an actual Lawn Equipment Dealer. Whoa.

I called around and found Nashville Lawn Equipment in Nashville. Their staff was outstanding and the price was competitive so we purchased it and it was delivered.

There's a bit of a learning curve for using a Zero Turn Mower. No steering wheel at all, it has "ground speed control levers". It also has a large roll bar which will apparently keep me from getting crushed if should I flip the mower...What?

I finally got the hang of it after about 5 or 10 minutes and stopped making donuts on our grass and never really had a concern about flipping over. Thank Goodness.

I just finished mowing a few minutes ago. While I love my new mower, I do hope it's my last mowing for this year!

Congrats on the new mower.  Nice to know other folks who may need them in the spring have a place to go that gives good service.

Wow, Tom - That thing is a beast! I'm really envious - I've been hoping my 42" Scotts (which would be a beater if it were a car) would break so I could get something like that.

What a fun new toy for Tom!  I love riding lawn mowers - and this one looks like a very cool one. I hope this is the last mowing of the season for you - I know it does get old after a while.

Chris Ann--I was fortunate to work with some good people.

Dick--This beauty cost more than my first car! It is a beast, 61" of mowing fun. Well, not fun exactly...

Debb--It does get tiring, but clearly, I'm the one getting old!

Tom,

It is a new toy, isn't it.  It does look like fun, and I am glad you don't have to mow again for a while.  A

Tom, this does look like a new shiny red toy!    Bet that is much better than the regular lawn mower!

We use our mower to mulch leaves all winter.  It's easier than getting rid of them any other way.

Tom- I'm laughing at the size of that thing.  I have a friend who mowed their lawn so her husband bought her a pink riding mower.  You really look like you're sitting on a throne!

Oh my husband would be so jealous!! But instead of getting a new mower, we opted for a new house with a much smaller yard :-)

My seven acres are mostly hills, I can't justify that riding machine Tom. But I'm now considering moving!

Impressive mower Tom, my son would love one of these for all the lawns he handles.  But not today, today he was busy with a shovel, wishing for a good snowblower.

Good morning Tom. That is quite the lawn mower that you got there. But then, with 5 acres to mow you need a machine like that.

Good morning Tom. I stopped 6 weeks ago, the only thing we are going to be growing from here is snow. Nice machine.

Tom, I grew up on ten acres and I miss mowing! It's a lot of work but, there's something about it that's relaxing too. Love the zero turn!

Tom,  Looks like you are having fun out there.  We have snow on the ground today.  Yep - dropped 50 degrees in 24 hours.  Hate it!  Wish I had mowing weather.

I'm wondering if your new mower has cup holders????  I bet you will be spending lots of time on that new toy.

R & A--I'm embarrassed to say it is a little like getting a new red bike at Christmas!

Joan--I do love the color!

Tammy--I'm with you. Hopefully the leaves will stop moving around pretty soon.

Kathy--It does sit pretty high up! And it also goes fast!! LOL

Colleen--That sounds like a great trade to me!

Tom--We plan on staying here at least another ten years so it was worth the cost and it cut my mowing time almost in half. I like that part alot!

Sharon--I may sell tickets for a ride. Seriously, it is so much faster...that's the best part.

Bob--Oh man, you guys are really getting hit. Ouch.

Michael--I did the research and this baby was the answer. It is big, though.

Joe--Thanks. We get very little snow here even if the temps dip into the 20's. I probably mow for 8-9 months of the year.

Amanda--It is kind of relaxing. I've written some of my best posts in my head on the mower before I sat down at the computer!

Belinda--I saw that the temp was around 18 degrees this morning in your general neighborhood! Oh boy! It does have a cup holder for my favorite beverage...but not too much, I have to keep my lines straight  Belinda Spillman !!
