As we all know, today is Veteran's Day - a day greatly devoted to showing gratitude for the sacrifices of our current and former military personnel. Today happens to be near and dear to my heart in particular because of my time spent in the military several years back, and because my experiences there led me to my husband. So naturally, this day means a great deal to me. In an effort to show thier gratitude to the country's veterans, there are a multitude of both local businesses and national chains that are doing what they can today to give back to those that have served and are currently serving this great country of ours!

A few places veterans can go today to receive a little "thank you" include (but are not limited to): Hooters (free entree), Barnes and Noble (15% discount on all Barnes and Noble devices), California Pizza Kitchen (free entree from a specialized Veterans Day menu), Applebees (free meal), Bed Bath & Beyond (20% off their entire purchase, including veteran spouses), Denny's (build your own free grand slam breakfast), Red Robin (free Red's Tavern Double Burger and bottomless fries), Firestone Complete Auto Care (additional 10% off the lowest advertised price of any automotive service), Outback Steakhouse (free Bloomin' Onion and a beverage), Cracker Barrel (free Double Chocolate Fudge Coca-Cola Cake dessert. Veterans_Day_2014For all others that purchase this desert and other retail items, 10% of all proceeds will be donated to the USO), JCPenney (extra 20% off select apparel and 10% off select furniture in stores November 3-15)... The list goes on! To see more places that are participating in Veteran's Day appreciation, click here!

Locally, there are a few events and ceremonies being held in honor of our veterans as well. In our own backyard of Largo, the city is celebrating Veteran's Day with an intimate ceremony at the Military Court of Honor located in Largo Central Park at 7:00pm. The ceremony will feature music, brought to you by Florida Fan Fare Brass, a keynote speaker and a color guard presentation. Some new additions to the event this year are a live band, military vehicle displays and food, all commencing at 4:00pm. The City of Clearwater and the Tampa Bay Veterans Alliance are dedicating a historical exhibit honoring World War I service members from the area, whose names were just recently discovered during the Capitol Theater renovations. The ceremony took place today from 9-10 am at the Clearwater Main Library.

If you haven't thanked a veteran or active member of the armed forces in a while, today is the best day to do so. Show them how much you care and how much you appreciate the sacrifices they've made. It'll make their day, and even yours, a little brighter!
