The Right Way to Leave Your Home for New Buyers

Sold!At some point in our lives, most of us will have move into a new home. Moving can be stressful, time consuming, and exhausting. After going through the painstaking effort of moving out of a home, there is nothing worse than opening the door to your new home, only to find the house a mess, with a dirty kitchen and bathrooms. On the flip side, there is nothing more exciting than opening the door to your new home that has been thoroughly cleaned, ready for you to move in, and enjoy.

At the same time, the seller is also packing and going through the painstaking effort of moving out of their home, into a new one. Moving day is exhausting. With everything else involved, the thought of deep cleaning your home can be overwhelming.

That leads to the question, as a seller, what kind of condition should your home be left for the new buyer? How should a seller leave their home for the new buyers at closing?

Most sellers do deep clean their homes and leave it move in ready. However, some sellers do not think about the next family moving into their home. In the stress of the move, they are only focused on finishing their moving. Here are a few simple steps to help sellers plan ahead. This will ensure their home is move-in ready for the next family.

  • Have your carpets professionally cleaned. Vacuuming the floors is not enough. Some sellers feel that the carpets will just get dirty again when the next family moves in. Most people protect their floors with plastic liners or cardboard panels when moving into a new home

  • Deep clean your kitchen. This includes polishing the appliances, cleaning out the refrigerator, cleaning the oven, and wiping down the cabinets inside and out.

  • Dust your blinds, light fixtures, ceiling fans, and trim.

  • Ensure your yard is mowed, weeded, and watered. Clean oil spots on the driveway, shovel the snow if needed, and remove any yard waste left by your beloved pet.

  • Put all home appliance documentation, extra keys, and garage door openers on the kitchen counter. The new homeowner will be excited to see all house related items collected in one central location.

  • If you do not have time to complete the work yourself, consider hiring a cleaner and/or yard maintenance person to help ensure you house is ready for its new family.

When leaving a home, a good rule of thumb is to think about the condition you would like your new home. Make sure you leave your home in that condition.
