Do you consider yourself a good neighbor or do you have good neighbors around you?  In an age where technology rules and connectivity happens more in cyberspace than in the cul-de-sac, let's not lose sight of the tremendous benefits to stepping out of the front door and getting to know your neighbors and letting them get to know you. It's a basic fact that's just as important today as it's ever been.

From just a little hello and a small wave from across the yard, to pitching in to help each other after a storm, to block parties and a very warm welcome to the new neighbors in the neighborhood, it's all about connecting.  Connecting is the key to a safer neighborhood, friendly neighbors, and getting others involved.

You have the ability to start a trend and truly raise the value of the whole neighborhood.  There's magic that happens when people watch out for each other, talk to each other - over fences, in driveways and sitting on the porch. There's something amazing to be said for the peace of mind that comes with having good neighbors.

So how can you be a better neighbor?

1) Don't isolate yourself - make it a point to touch base with at least 1-3 neighbors a week, even if it's just to say, "Hello" and see if they need anything.

2) Be mindful of your contribution - cross the street and take a look at your own house.  Does the yard need work? Is disrepair showing and creating an eyesore for your neighbors? Are trash cans or toys littering the yard? Appearances Count!

3) Keep watch - whether part of an organized neighborhood group or just your little corner of the world - always be aware of what's going on around your home and that of your neighbors.  "Nothing like having that one special noisy neighbor" - Believe it or not, they're the ones keeping our streets and community safer.

Just make it a point to get out and see the people around you.  Connect, Pitch in, be part of the whole.  It will truly encourage others to do the same - make our world a better place to live, it starts with your neighborhood.

So are you a good neighbor and do you know any good neighbors?
