It's Enough to Give Me Gas...

By
Home Inspector with Complete Home Inspections, Inc. TN Lic#050

I don’t know how it is in your neck of the woods but the price of fuel here is the Nashville area is all over the board. Here in Brentwood, a more affluent area, it finally dropped below $3 a gallon to $2.979. (Woo Hoo!!) Drive 5 miles down the road and the price of gas is anybody’s guess. It ranges from $2.699 to$2.899. Late this evening I was in East Nashville and I purchased a tank of gas for $2.629. What gives? Same gas. Same trucks. Just different locations of town.

Here in Tennessee, State law prohibits stations from selling gas for less than they pay for it. The price really varies between the big chain stores like Mapco, Thornton's (no relation) and Daily's. I’ll swear, the price of gas, it is enough to give me gas.

And just a few feet over the florida line it would be 25-50 cents more per gallon. We enjoy the relieve we'ves seen even though.

Back in the day the pricing for gasoline made some sense to me--lower in the Bay Area; higher in the Sierra Nevada mountains where it was costly to ship.

Today pricing seems to be dictated by the wealth, or lack thereof, of the town or area. High in Palo Alto--low in South San Francisco; high in most parts of Sn Francisco--lower in Santa Clara.

We just had a new low priced leader build a new station, so we are benefitting from a good old fashioned gas war.  $2.41 a few days ago.  I had 800 gas points from Giant for Shell, though, so I was able to fill up for $1.79 there.  I will take it!!

Good morning Michael. I bough gas yesterday under $3, I was like a little kid. Almost forgot what that number looked like at a gas station.

Michael, gas prices have plunged in Florida except for station owners too lazy or greedy to change prices. Enjoy your day!

I remember when the price went UP to $1.15 and the Dems accused Bush and Cheney of personally causing the price to go up so their friends could profit and get rich.

Wow, those friends must have gotten REALLY rich these past 6 years...

And now people are excited the price is down below $3?

The largest private employer WalMart is located in Bentonville AR.  That's where I do business.  One store can be within 5 cents but recently they are holding steady at around 2.62 per gallon.  If you get a gas card you get an additional 3 cents off per gallon.

They're all too high.  Local and federal taxes make up a huge percentage of the price.

How much is in the Highway Trust Fund???  A bundle and they want more overage.

Michael, welcome to Zone pricing, where the oil companies will price according to what the market can bare and they must feel your area can afford to pay a little more

I didn't know until recently that the EPA has a different requirement for the blend of gas in many different cities, and Nashville is one that requires a different blend compared to area's just outside of town, like Murfreesboro and Spring Hill. I also have heard but not confirmed that taxes on gas varies by city and state. Probably why Florida gas is so much cheaper than Georgia.

The oil producer in the United States hit a 28 year high on the amount of oil produced inside the country. It's the biggest reason why oil prices are at a 4 year low.

Larry, I didn't know that either about the EPA. Wow! That is tricky stuff and very convoluted. I'm kind of amazed that that's even allowed!

Good morning Michael,

I use super so its still over $3 a gallon but barely! I haven't seen gas this low in years and it's a pretty sight! Lenn is right..Local and federal taxes make up a huge percentage of the price! It should be lower!!

We have the same issue around here of gas prices being all over place.  But I'm certainly enjoying the price break while it lasts!
