Patience Makes a Difference with Richmond VA Kitchen Remodeling

Having patience helps make a difference with our Richmond VA kitchen addition and remodeling project.

For approximately six months we've had an ongoing kitchen remodeling and addition project that almost has driven our Fan District vicinity home bonkers.  Fortunately, we recently switched contractors, and suddenly progress gained more momentum, and more construction tasks were being accomplished at a seemingly faster rate.

Although I appreciate the work our previous contractor did, my other half and I always knew that our kitchen addition was a side job for that contractor rather than a primary focus.  The previous contractor did explain at the beginning that a commercial job he had going concurrently did demand a lot of time.  As long as we were patient with him, everything would be OK.  However, within just a couple months the patience required started to wear thin and even became greater than the contractor had imagined.

Sometimes finding a new contractor can make all the difference in the world.

On the other hand, our new contractor has demonstrated more initiative with getting things done fairly quickly at a very reasonable price.  A neighbor of ours had highly recommended this other contractor for work he did on her home.  We decided it was time for a change.  Being homeowner as general contractor, I probably had a little more flexibility to choose another contractor in order to get things done.  Also, since the original contractor was very busy with his commercial work, he was very willing to settle up with me with the already completed work.  Soon after starting with our new contractor, we suddenly and amazingly saw that progress began to pick up a lot of speed!

Here's the new green slate heated flooring for kitchen before cabinet installation.

For example, just within the last three weeks we had new green slate heated flooring installed in our kitchen.  Then new custom hickory kitchen cabinets were installed last week.  Next, we had all our Electrolux kitchen appliances purchased from hhgregg delivered and put into place.  What was a former construction site within our home now has begun to look much more like a fantastic new kitchen!

It's very exciting to be close to the "Finish Line" with a kitchen addition and renovation project!

Furthermore, the kitchen lighting is almost done, and we just had a our new marble Forest Green countertops installed a couple nights ago.  Currently, the window, back door and baseboard trim are being completed, so we're getting very close to the end of this kitchen addition and renovation journey.  All that remains are some finishing touches to the new kitchen's electrical system, finishing the new kitchen plumbing, installing the marble backsplash, and then calling for the final electrical, plumbing and building inspections.

Here are the new kitchen cabinets during the Forest Green marble countertop installation.

Is a kitchen addition or renovation recommended for every home?

Would you ever consider doing a kitchen renovation or addition project in your own home?  Well, I would weigh all the advantages and disadvantages first and then make a decision.  Having the kitchen torn apart definitely is a disruption.  It does require a lot of patience and willingness to sacrifice the conveniences of having a functional kitchen for a while.  However, in our case we finally discovered close to project completion that the advantages definitely outweigh the disadvantages!

Here's a sample of the Forest Green marble that we decided to use for our kitchen countertops.

It's going to be quite beautiful.

Just as we recommend a full time real estate practioner, I would always recommend using a full time contracting business.

Thanks for your comments, Lenn.  Being homeowner as general contractor has been a great one-time experience for me.  It's been very educational, and really has allowed me to shop around for subcontractors without having the standard 25 percent upcharge that general contractors often tack onto their invoices!

Love the marble and the kitchen is almost the new living room. Slow dining, food prep with a barley pop, xm and family or friends and hours can go by in the right kitchen set up!

Thanks, Andrew.  Everyone has different tastes for countertops.  The cabinets, floors and countertops go well together I think.  We still need to get the marble backsplash done, and that likely will happen next week!

Good Morning Andrew - looks like your kitchen remodel is coming along, and looks beautiful.

Yes, sometimes you must change contractors. I worked with one about 10 years ago who was HORRIBLE!!

Andrew, The kitchen is looking great! 6 months is a long time to go with no kitchen. Are you living there during the reno? We plan to do renovations at some point and I hope and pray it goes smoothly.
