A Critter Tail...I Mean Tale!

Critter Tails...I Mean TalesEveryone has them from time to time, even those folks who live in the 'Burbs. I'm not talking about domestic animals like dogs, cats or even horses. I mean those nasty, unwanted wild animals--like...mice!

OK, before I even get started I have to tell you that I'm a bit of a wimp when it comes to this particular variety of rodent. I don't know what it is, I just have this, this thing! They're little, but I don't see Mickey, I see a furry creature that wants to run up my pants! Not the best phobia to have for a REALTOR® who often shows vacant houses out in the "country".

So, we live on five acres and my riding mower broke down, as in blew up. Like any good person with just enough mechanical skills to be dangerous, I tried to fix it. And fix it. And fix it. Weeks passed and the grass got longer and longer.

One early evening while I was out, my wife Tammie took our little dog Roxie out for a walk. By this time the grass was about as tall as our little 12 pound dog. Apparently while I was screwing around with the mower, some mice had set up a little homestead near our garage in the very tall grass. As Tammie was walking towards the open garage door Roxie started going crazy, she saw a little critter in the doorway. Hoping to scare it away Tammie moved towards it, and you guessed it, the little mouse ran into the deep recesses of the garage. Crap!

Like any good wife she instructed me in no uncertain terms that I better get rid of this unwanted visitor. I ran to the store and picked up a variety of mouse "tools". As I went to unload the back of the car, our furry friend ran right across my foot! OMG, I almost crapped my shorts!! I let out a very manly "eek!", twice, I think. My worst nightmare.

The rest of the story is almost anti-climactic. We were able to "get rid" of our friend after a few days without anymore close encounters.

How do you feel about critters? Do you have any crazy tales?

Tom,

You are very funny.  If we leave water outside over night, invariably racoons show up to drink it, even here in the flat areas.  We have a salt marsh and native plant preserve 100 yards from us.  I am not scared, and I find them interesting creatures.

We had them in LA also, and they would use our pool to wash the grapefruits they ate from our tree.  In the morning we would find perfectly hollowed out grapefruits bowls floating in the pool.

Our cats have brought lizards, voles, mice, etc to the door.  Kobe brought us snakes and jack rabbits...snakes were still alive, and we would google them, and then relocate them.  LOL A

Tom,  Oh my gosh, reading this had me laughing so hard.  I live next to a large open field and a canal. I do from time to time have those critters in my garage and once in my house.  I finally found the phat bastard dead under my stove. I managed to overdose on the peanut butter it was eating from the trap.  I don't like killing things. Mice, sadly enough, are among the critters I have trapped. I just need to make sure it is quick and gets the job done. I've seen people use the kind of traps where only the tail or a foot is trapped.  Or, the kind that they stick to. That is just HORRIBLE.

Tom, I'm not a big fan of things like rats, snakes, etc., but I guess if they don't bother me I won't bother them - as long as they stay out of my house and yard.

Hi Tom - I had to stop and think about it since I tend to really like almost all animals, even, from a distance, the dangerous ones. But there is one I really despise - chickens. Ugh.

Grandma used to put all kinds of traps in our family's (North Carolina) mountain house.  Aunt Mary paid a pest control service a lot of money.  But the mice kept coming!

So, I started taking the most powerful anti-mice weapons with me on our vacations there- our cats!  To the cats, it was pure sport.  The mice were gone in no time.

     Eek!   LOL

Tom- I don't want to be the bearer of bad news but there is no such thing as a "manly eek."  It is an oxymoron.  Personally, I can't take anything that crawls or slithers.

David--I love animals as much as the next guy--but I'm with you regarding mice!

A--You are one brave soul! We had raccoons living in our attic for awhile. Not good during mating season!!

Kathleen--Tormenting is not something I want to do. I really don't want to see one of those mice "motels" or whatever bouncing around. Yuck.

Troy--I draw the line at the backdoor. Anywhere past there and it's open season.

Dick--I knew you loved animals of every description...but chickens? Really?

Fred--I can see where that would work!

Kathy--It was a bass sort of eek! O well, I'm fibbing. Tammie said it sounded just like a little girl!! She was upstairs and heard it through the floor. Dang, Kathy Streib !

Tammie--"Abandon hope, all ye who enter here"!

This is the time of the year when mice are seeking warm shelter in the homes of suburban dwellers. If they are above the ceiling, we call the exterminators. When there is evidence of a mouse in the pantry, we use the disposable traps. Fortunately, mice are rare visitors for us.
