Christmas arrived early for me this year.

To take advantage of a special sale, my husband brought home the new camera I've been wanting for quite some time. I've been playing with it since Friday morning and having a blast learning  getting confused with all the bells and whistles. 

It's a Canon EOS 70D.

I'm really interested in improving my photography skills for stills, and needed a better camera. But, I also wanted to upgrade my video camera capabilities too.  This was the camera that kept getting the best reviews for both of my needs. 

I'll need to order a new external mic as the old one doesn't fit the shoe on this camera, but that's okay. Right now, I'm happy a kid with a new toy! 

 

The top photo was taken with my old Vixia HF M301. Admittedly, it's tough to take a bad picture of Mac, but in my opinion, the photo taken with the Canon is better. Neither photo was edited.

Happy New Camera! Know you were concerned with the learning curve.... but it's like eating an elephant--- just one bite at a time. Suggest using the "auto" features to get used to the holding and hand placement. Learn about that which you will be doing most of first and save the lesser features for later. Most of all, have fun.

Brad, great advice and my husband told me the same thing. Baby steps - and use the auto features until I have the time to discover all of the other wonderful options. Still, I have a creative side that wants to jump in with wild abandon. Lol.

Maybe it might be fun to see how far you can stretch that creative side with the feature set on "Auto". Then you will know that it's your creativity and not programming tricks. Handle the backlighting in auto by using the exposure compensating adjustments. See how Auto handles fill flash situations or multiple light sources. How does auto handle the new circular polarizer on your list of things to buy (hint, hint). Oh so much fun ahead!!!

Hi Patricia - I'm loving it and picked up a Sigma 10-20mm lens yesterday. It's an ultru wide angle, I tested it out in my own home yesterday - wow, it's so cool. I can get the entire Great Room - not just a corner...

Love the new camera and am thinking about an upgrade and a new lens. There is so much to consider. I have a great 10-20mm lens and use it at about a 16 for the best shots.
