Living in the beautiful town of Okotoks truly offers the best of both worlds. If you love the idea of small town living within a convenient distance of the big city, Okotoks might be right for you.
With a population of roughly 25,000 people, Okotoks has earned the distinction of Alberta’s largest town. It is located 18km south of Calgary. The name was inspired by the Blackfoot First Nation term, “ohkotok” meaning “rock”. Some say the town was likely named after a large glacial rock formation that sits just west of the town.Okotoks is divided down the middle by the Sheep River. The north side of town is ideal for commuters who need to travel to Calgary for work. It’s an easy drive, and in about 30 minutes, you can already be in the downtown area. North Okotoks is also home to the desirable community of Crystal Shores. This beautiful lake community makes it easy to feel like you’re on vacation all-year round.
The south side of the river is home to a large commercial district. Several large retailers including Walmart, Home Depot and Costco offer residents here all the important amenities they need so close to home. Having the city nearby is great, but it’s even better to not rely on it.
Okotoks has become a popular place for young families. There are several excellent schools to choose from, both in the public and private streams. In fact, Strathcona-Tweedsmuir Private School ranked #7 among Alberta’s best schools. Small town festivals, friendly neighbourhood parks, and a strong sense of community make Okotoks just the kind of place where you can feel immediately right at home.
If living an active lifestyle is important to you and your family, you will be in good company. Community events such as the annual Terry Fox Run, Light Up Okotoks, and Rotary Soap Box Derby encourage healthy living and charity within the community. There are also three golf courses and several campgrounds nearby. With the beautiful views of the Alberta foothills always in sight, Okotoks is the kind of place that makes you want to seek out a new adventure all-year round.
