Meowtropolitan... Seattle Is Getting Catty with Coffee

One of my colleagues just informed me that Seattle is getting its very own cat-cafe.

Let that sink in for a moment...

Yes, a cat cafe.

I had to Google this...and yes, this is real. However, it's not exactly what you think. This isn't the first feline-fad to take place here in the Emerald City either. In fact, Uber has also starred as a front-runner of feline-friendly businesses around this area.

Last year, I when I heard about Uber's UberKitten Deliveries, I was in love with the idea. Every year, on National Cat Day that is, Uber works with local animal shelters and allows for its app users to "Request Kittens." For $20, you get to cuddle kittens for 15 minutes, with these furbabies being delivered to your location with the aid of trained professionals.  The whole point of this is to raise money for the Seattle Humane Society and to help kittens find homes. (This service is also available in San Francisco and New York!)

With Seattle Meowtropolitan though, you would expect to cuddle kittens each time you visit the cafe. Of course, there are probably a few eyebrow raises on your end. Me too, quite honestly. How can that be sanitary, right?

Well, it turns out that this cafe is going to have its kitten room entirely separate from the food and drink service room. Cats will not be roaming about but instead be confined to a specific area to keep up with health codes. I also expect that they would have strict rules about employee-cat contact and cleanliness to keep up with the same health codes.

Before you start searching on Amazon for a cat leash though, hold your... uh... whiskers. You are not able to bring your tabby or calico into the cafe. Your feline friend will need to stay at home.

Meowtropolitan claims to be promoting cat culture, thus promoting cat adoptions from animal shelters. I don't know about you, but this is going to be a furry interesting venture. I can see myself venturing down to Capitol Hill (their prospective location) and having a "cat-puccino" on a "Caturday."

They expect to open in mid-2015.

What are your thoughts on a cat-cafe? Would you like to see this in your area?

Have a Rain-tastic day!

Okay, based on my name alone I like the idea. As a cat lover I think it's a cute way to try to find homes for furry friends, but really don't know if it will be a great long term theme.

David - That was probably my first thought too - I'm sure this place will attract a lot of animal lovers though!

Praful - I know that I'm intrigued and that I'll probably pop over there and see how it goes. I'd have to be careful though. I have a bleeding heart when it comes to animals without homes. I don't think my Ernie would be too keen on me bringing home a new friend.

Cat - You have a great name! I'm sure the novelty of it will picque the interest of a lot of people in the beginning. Hopefully their coffee and pastries are supurb to keep it running.  Even in Capitol Hill where people tend to be more into "alternative" lifestyles and are of a younger crowd, a place with bad coffee won't last.

Mary,

I love the idea of helping cat shelters find home for their cats.  Ron and I love cats!  I would have to drink coffee elsewhere for fear of my bringing someone home.  We do sponsor cats (ie a year of food and meds) at our local shelter, and our sponsored kitties get adopted sooner than later.  There is something about prospective owners knowing that the kitty was sponsored which makes them more special...A

Alexandra, that is wonderful! I'll have to check into Seattle's Humane Society about sponsoring furbabies now. That would be a very meaningful thing for me since animals cannot speak for themselves and I have such a bleeding heart.
