Christmas in Rivermoore Park

The tradition of having one tree in our community for the children to decorate began in 2013.  It was one of those ideas that came at the last minute. My husband and I had the thought that this holiday season has become so commercialized.  Our trees are artificial pre-lit and have 20 yards of fancy wired ribbons, ornaments that are over the top and Tree TOPPERS.

Christmas TreeWhat happened to the    popcorn strung by those small hands that were so proud of their handiwork?

What happened to the construction paper chains that went on the tree?

What happened to the construction paper snowmen?

What happened to the multi-colored lights the children loved?

Many people still have the ornaments made by the children and they are very involved in their trees at home.  Many have real trees and Christmas is centered around the children and family.

In our subdivision outdoor decorations, not so much......

Most of the subdivisions now have beautiful white lights with elegant garland and bows. Many times it is done by commercial speciality companies.  Every community seems to try to out do the other.....at least in my area of North Atlanta.

.............hence came the idea of a CHILDREN'S TREE.

We have a large cedar tree at the location of our halloween display.  Last year we hung lights on that tree.   There was a notice for the children to join us on a certain date and hang their own ornaments; homemade or purchased.  We had refreshments for them.  We just wanted them to be involved.  I made little oval labels for them to stick on their shirts or coats that said "Official Tree Decorator".

This year our subdivision, Rivermoore Park in Suwanee, has gone to having our subdivision commercially decorated.  They are beautiful as we planned.  However, we kept the children's tree for the children.  The company who did our installation of decorations,  put only lights on that tree.   We are planning another tree decorating party.

Last year we had quite an assortment of ornaments.  Some were made for the birds to eat, some were purchased and had their name written on them, but the point is,  they participated.  This was THEIR tree and it is still THEIR tree.
