6/26/08: A retirement community is one step closer. Forsyth County Planning commission approved Erickson Retirement Communities for a condisitonal use permit & to rezone 2 parcels of land from residential to a mutiple planned district. 1500 independent living units, 150 assisted living units & 100 skilled care units. 1000 full time jobs will result from this project.
6/4/08: Cumming family bought Indio Joe's Sports Pub & Restaurant in Cumming Ga, Forsyth Co. The Cumming location is Indigo Joe's largest single franchise in square footage, offering more to sports fans, families and local teams. New Hotel off Market Place "Holiday Inn Express" could open in late 2008. The hotel will be near the new commercial developments and close to the Northside Hospital of Forsyth County. This new hotel in Cumming Ga will be 4 (four) stories, have a fitness area, indoor pool, spa, business center & 700 square feet of meeting space. Features: high spped internet, local phone service, and a breakfast bar.
5/23/08: Lanier Tech in Forsyth County, Cumming Ga is expanding. A groundbreaking for a new Health
Science Building & Economic Development center will double the size of the Forsyth County Campus on Majors Road in Cumming Ga. James Harrington was instrumental in bringing the campus to Cumming Ga and the building will be named for him.
5/1/08: Around the end of the year approximately 350 Forsyth County school buses are going high-tech. GPS units will be installed to track buses. Real-time datat will be provided by the GPS units which promote safety. The school district of Forsyth County will be able to track and locate buses anywhere.
4/21/08: Forsyth County Board of Commissioners has approved retail rezoning for a section of Casstleberry Rd.
Site plans must be approved as well as obtaining water & sewer permits before breaking ground.
4/21/08: The local Forsyth County Board of Commissioners has given approval to build a 164 acre mixed use development on the intersection of Union Hill, McGinnis Ferry & McFarland Roads. It will have 12-story buildings, 900,000 square feet of office space, 500 hotel rooms, 1.4 million square feet of retail and 875 homes. Expected finish date 2011 or 2012.
4/11/08: Forsyth County, Cumming Ga will now have a Planned Development which will cater to children. This will be expected to be complete by the summer of 2009. It will be similar in design to the Dacula Kids Village. This new development will be on Post Road near the Midway Park. The shopping center will be geared towards children, clothing stores, an ice cream parlor are some of the highlites. This is the fifth (5th) childrens center by Watkins Retail Group. This has been given final approval by the Board of Commissioners.
4/4/08: Northside Hospital-Forsyth will be opening The Women's Center this year. The Womens center in Cumming Ga will offer maternity and newborn services. Originally scheduled to open on Labor Day,it looks like the early August. 108,000 square foot facility will be two stories. The operating and recovery rooms are designed so that mothers and babies can be together after delivery. Two nuseries will be in the center one designed for babies born with special needs.
Not only is Northside Hospital-Forsyth expanding we are getting another new medical building. There is an empty plot of land between Oakland Drive, Maple Street and Pirkle Ferry Road. It is currently being referred to as the "gateway to the city of Cumming. 12,000 square feet, 2 story building will begin by the end of April 2008. Possible tenants...law firm, real estate company, coffee shop, and other doctors. It will have a brick, motar and glass design.
Sheriff's office opens south precinct. Brand new 7000 square foot building is behind South Forsyth High School off Ronald Regan Blvd. The north precinct was opened less than a week prior to the south precinct. It's location is next to Central Park.
Since our drought in Cumming Ga has Lake Lanier dropping three boat ramps have been extended. The county is looking for additional water sources. The county recently approved groundwater exploration.
