Does Your Headshot Hit Your Target?

Know Your Audience

I have had this debate for the past year with several folks. The traditional headshot for most agents is a glamour shot. Title companies are always sponsering "get a headshot" days. We are told over and over that we need a better picture. We need a professional to take our picture.

Well, I disagree. Not all of us do.

You have to know your audience. While a suit and tie and glam shot might be what it takes in NYC or LA or San Fran. I can tell you, most folks in smaller towns are not walking around in a suit and tie. Heck, during the summer, most agents in Arizona are even in shorts. (Not me, don't want to scare anyone off...lol).

I live in a smaller town. We are just normal folks. Our homes range between 100k - 200k. Many of you relate. I have a basic head shot. Yep, the one you see. I use it on everything. Regardless of who posts it or what website it is attached to. I am me. This is who you get when we meet and spend time together.

Guess what? It works. I have gotten many clients who compliment me on being who I say I am. I had one who recently lost two folks in her family and picked me due to my picture looking like I had a good "heart" and "Caring eyes".  It was my pleasure helping her throug her pain.

They tell me they like me as they get what they see. They pick me out of a list of 50 agents in our company usually  due to the picture. They stay because I'm ok in my own skin and in the end, they get GREAT CUSTOMER SERVICE and a great agent (yep, confident too..lol)

We all know the debate on why we need a professional picture. I'm not interested in that. I'd love to hear from others that have a more casual picture you use and why?  What value do you see? Why do you feel the days of glam shots need revisited?

Good morning Tammie,

I cringe when I see the glam shots! A professional can take your photo but it doesn't mean it can't be a relaxed professional shot. My picture was taken outside by a professional who specializes in natural business appropriate shots. I use it on everything and most people say..you look just like your picture..I'd recognize you anywhere!

As my hair gets more gray, I update photos. And I dress the way I dress when I go on an appointment. Most often at first meetings people smile and say I look just like my photo, so I can't complain.

You should look professional & sometimes you have to dictate what that entails because agents just don't get it. It's best when you do look like the photo.

I need to do a new head shot.  But honestly think you can get a good shot with a digital at home.  Generally the picture will be small on the web site of a business card.

Love your picture! Yes, our picture is the first impression and if it doesn't reflect who you are, your clients will see through you.

Tammy Adams Ha! I'm with you 100%. That's why I post my wife with me in most of my photos. She's a lot easier to look at than me and she's certainly been a drawing card as folks who call me often ask if they could speak with her from the get go. Real post. I love it. Have a very Merry Christmans and a Happy Healthy and Prosperous New Year

I am often surprised when I meet someone in person and all I have ever seen is their glamour shot when I see their current face, it's a bit of a shock. I'm like Popeye, I am what I am

Funny, my team all got new pictures last week.  No glamour shots, but a professional photographer.  Girls wore suits and and Mike wore a tie.

I would rather have a "best look" picture on my website, because you never get a second chance to make a first impression.

I think it depends upon your market, and my clientale expect to find me professionally dressed with a late model car.

I do think thought that you look down to earth and friendly...

Eve

PS:  don't look, pictures are not up yet.

Cindy Jones  that is a cool headshot trick. A great way to take a picture where you don't look or feel stiff and yet make it look professional!

John DL Arendsen You are a smart man..LOL.  When all else fails, bring in backup!   :-)

My photo in profile isn't far off from what i look like. Little more silver and shorter, but that's it. I'm always amazed at some of the Glamour shots of Grandmothers and they don't understand the shock on the grandkids or kids faces. same goes for the first impression client meeting.

I agree; so I'm not wearing a tie in mine (it's been many years since I've worn a tie, though I've thought to get back to it just to give myself a sense of change).

The eyes speak ....your eyes surely do.

I agree with you completely. My picture was taken without me even thinking I might end up using it for business. A friend just snapped this one of me while we were playing on Grand Mesa. A month later I needed an updated picture, and I picked this one. It sure was a lot easier, cheaper, and more fun, than a professional photo shoot.

I love your picture Debbie Laity  I think the ones that don't look like you are trying to take a professional picture just make a person seem more accessable and creates a more at ease relationship from the get go
