My wife and I do not get to go to many Broadway Shows when they come to Connecticut, but when a play comes to Connecticut that really interests us we make every effort to go see it. Such was the case with Wicked At Bushnell Theater In Hartford, CT. last weekend. When tickets went on sale three months ago my wife got on the internet the first day they went on sale so we could get the best seats available, and I am glad she did.
Wicked was one of the most entertaining plays I have been to, and the twist on the original movie, The Wizard Of OZ was genius. Wicked portrays the Good Witch, Galinda (Glinda), and the Wicked Witch, Elphaba in a very different light from that of the original movie. Glinda is portrayed as a Miss Goodie-Two-Shoes who is very shallow and self-centered. Glinda had been pampered all her life, always getting what she wanted, and loved by everyone. She actually became the ultimate politician. Elphaba was rejected from birth by her father because of her green skin, and grew up with the guilty feeling she was the cause of her mother's death. Despite her very ruff personalty, Elphaba was a very smart caring person whose concern for the discrimination the animals of OZ were going through put her at odds with the leadership of OZ.
The play starts off at the end of the story with the death of the Wicked Witch, and the celebration that followed. But the play quickly becomes a recap of what led up to the death of the Wicked Witch, when the people of OZ question the Good Witch, Glinda about her relationship with the Wicked Witch Elphaba.
The play picks up at the birth of Elphaba, and then moves on quickly to when Glinda and Elphaba met at college. Neither one liked each other at first, but ended up being roommates.
Their relationship changes when what was meant to be a prank by Glinda, is seen as an act of kindness by Elphaba. From that moment on their relationship becomes a special one, but a relationship which becomes strained, because of Elphaba's support of the animals of OZ.
I am going to end my recap of the play here, because I do not want to ruin it for those who maybe reading this blog and are planning on going to see the show. What I will say further is that just like the portrayal of the Glinda and Elphaba is very different from the original movie, so is the ending.
I would highly recommend the Wicked, and for those who are able to see the Wicked At Bushnell Theater In Hartford, CT., you will be treated to an excellent cast, especially the actress who plays Elphaba who got standing ovations throughout the play.
